TAM, Baylor, TCU

Postby MV pony » Sun Dec 01, 2013 12:51 pm

Just checked out the DMN sports page. The headlines: TCU, TCU, TCU. Baylor, Baylor, Baylor. TAM, TAM, TAM. Didn't we win a game yesterday? SMU need the DMN behind it if it ever wants to be Dallas' team. And it's not about winning. I live in south Orange County, CA and USC is in the news everywhere, every day of the year, good season or bad. No game, no problem, they interview a player or a coach or talk about a practice. Hail, they'll even talk to fans if it's a slow news day. A good reporter can string a story out of nothing. Even OK gets better coverage than SMU. What's up with that?

Not surprising since Baylor is a top 10 team and A&M was playing a top 5 team (and they have a Heisman winner on the roster). Surely you don't expect an early season basketball win to get prime coverage in the DMN Sunday Edition during football season do you? USC is an established brand so them getting omnipresent coverage isn't surprising either.

If it makes you feel better I bet there are less than 15 A&M fans that even know they played a basketball game yesterday.

USC is an established brand in part because the media (and retailers) sell it year in and year out and make it popular. Even the old geezers I know who went to ND and Michigan are wearing USC gear. Go figure.

Yeah that and about 60 years of being the 1-2nd most successful program in the country including 11 National Championships and 7 Heismans

Watch 30/30 Pony Excess and you'll see why. DMN played a large role in destroying SMU's football program in order to grow their struggling mediocre newspaper.

Dallas Times Herald helped quite a bit. It was the newspaper/media wars in Dallas and Houston between the Post and Chronicle that exposed cheating in the SWC/Big 8 and precipitated investigations throughout the Southwest and resulted in Probations at about 9 schools-not named Rice. So glad that aspect of the story was told in 30 on 30 series because it had been largely forgotten until the film. However, it doesn't excuse not cleaning up a program with 5 probations in a little over a decade.

Agreed. But SMU should have already shaken off the post DP crap and the constant shooting ourselves on the foot. We do it both on the field and off the field. It has to stop and we need discipline in the entire program.

This ^.

Plus most of their elite guys tend to go on and have elite pro careers. Plus, at least recently, no pro football team in LA. Also, both UCLA and USC have other dominant athletic programs. For example, every year the town I live in (Ojai, CA) has a Pac 12 tournament called simply "The Ojai" (longest running tennis tournament in the country actually - 100 plus years). Anyway, it always seems it's UCLA vs USC in the final (both men and women and singles and doubles).

I would really like to see SMU be like a Texas version of USC but it's hard (USC is bigger and alums pump LOTS of money into that school - goes back to what Stallion always says: we get the kind of program the alumni are willing to pay for. Look at Stanford and all those silicon valley grads pumping money into that program?!? It's crazy). If we really want to build our program, we need to all go start companies, take them public and/or get bought out and then put hefty percentages of the earnings into the SMU athletic programs (football, but also swimming and tennis - world class all the way). That's what I'm trying to do honestly. I've gotten the donations up to the 5 figures. My five year plan is to get it up to 6 (going to be hard to do, but it's my "big hairy goal").

As soon as I make $10 billion, Ford is going to have a partial roof and a video board that will put Jerryworld to shame. The IPF will have gold plated door knobs and individual hot tubs in each locker. Our coach will make $10M a year. I will pay people to go to the games

Cool. So pull a Phil Knight.

Seriously, who is a relatively young alum who has some real cash now? I know a few but they all are W2 types. Need to invest in "pre-tax" dollars. What about the guy who started Thom's shoes? I really like his model. I wonder if he is a sports fan. And I wonder how much profit he really pulls down.

USC is what they are today because their administration is very protective of their football program. In other words their long history of winning & winning big & consistently. The media loves that

Needless to say we haven't & didn't. Easy explanation. However it's time to start & build over the coming years. But w/ RGT & THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION that's another story. LOL! Jury still out.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.
