I agree with the second part, but don't think Mora is an LA guy. He went to UW and bounced around various cities in the NFL.

Alright, so if the staff consists of HC, 9 assistants and 2 GAs:
HC - eval
---
OC/QB - eval
RB - eval
OL - Recruit
WR - Recruit
GA Offense
---
DC - eval
DL - eval
LB - Recruit
Sec - Recruit
GA Defense
---
ST - eval

In the current staff, with all of the NFL scouting experience and the fact that we do find diamonds in the rough, it seems like we are fine on the evaluation side of the fence. Phillips is good as an offensive recruiter. Is Odum decent on the defensive side? Like I said before, if we hire a really good recruiter as an o-line coach and a really good recruiter as an LB coach are we in good shape at that point?

IMHO, the main problem we may have is getting the budget to fill out the staff. I don't think that problem goes away if we hire another head coach and then have to skimp on assistants.

Again, another question to throw out there - is June limited in the budget he has to hire assistants, or is he making decisions that the CoC doesn't agree with, so they limit him on what he spends on assistants?

Head coach needs to recruit as well. We are within 250 miles of a lot of good players. That's driving distance. A Cedar Hill coach said that he had not seen June in years. I understand we do not even have weekly recruiting meetings. I can't defend this situation any longer.

During USC/UCLA game they mentioned that his Mom went to USC, Dad got doctorate degree from USC and he lived in Los Angeles before. He at least understands that culture

Its not really how many coaches have what defined role - its the emphasis the coach places on recruiting in general. June is ex NFL guy and is always going to think he can run circles around a college only coach - even though the evidence does not support this theory. It of course is not his fault in his mind, so there is always something else to blame. That flavor of the month is the inability to advance his players to a degree within SMU.

He doesn't like to recruit since he is a bit of an introvert and prefers to be around people who already adore him - assistant coaches and anyone who knew him "back when". New people annoy him since there is not the proper deference to his (he thinks) great career - and worship of the so called inventor of the run and shoot. Forget that nobody is amazed, scared or wants to copy that tired old system, our staff still thinks its cool since it usually beats really bad schools. But thats about it.

I bet you could get a buy out for a million since not enough people really love him here. That would be a bargain compared to what we could get on the other end with a coach that wants to be here and, understands the school and love recruiting.

Basically every coach at tcu is actively involved in recruiting, including Patterson. I suppose Bumpas doesn't hit the road very often anymore but the rest of the staff seems to be on the road a lot.

Frankly, I don't care if the coach goes out and hits the road or not. The results are all that matter. It seems to me the results aren't what we would expect as alumni, and it looks like the problem is that we have way too many evaluators on the staff and too few recruiters.

If for some reason we keep June, it seems like at minimum:
- Either Hal or Morrison has to go so that we can bring on a real coach instead of a GA for a position (limited to 9 coaches).
- Either Suan or Chang has to go, so that we can bring on a recruiting focused RB or OL coach.
- We have to bring on a real LB coach that focuses on recruiting.
- We have to bring in a real special teams coach, who is probably a recruiting guru as well.

Instead we hire guys with the promise that they never, ever have to recruit, or guys that recruit for another school, or guys that forget to mail offers out.

I miss Reinebold - dude may have had his issues, but he was very active on the recruiting trail and made many inroads in Louisiana

Good recruiting usually gets results. June will hire his buddies. LB just hired good coaches. The coaches LB hired can both recruit and coach not just recruit. The head coach has to meet the HC coaches and have good relationships with them so they can get good leads from them.
