2 year extension with no buyout after 1 year/ salary reduced

Postby ponyinNC » Tue Dec 03, 2013 3:24 pm

This is what seems to be coming, though it is purely my educated guess.

So effectively JJ gets to coach next year under the 1st year of the extension, which would have been the last year of the present contract, and then he walks away. There would be no bad blood. A timeline for stepping down and next coach could be set.

SMU admin can claim that JJ is not a "lame duck" coach next year since we gave him a 2 year extension. JJ can get full salary next year. Everyone of course would know that he is basically a lame duck coach in effect, since there wouldn't be any buyout that 2nd year and the salary would be heavily reduced for that 2nd year as well.

Otherwise, we would have to pay JJ $2M to go back to the islands, and we would have to pay the new HC / staff. I think neither SMU nor the CofC have the appetite for that right now.

Mark my words...extension coming after the UCF game, win or lose. I'm obviously not involved in this negotiation - but if I was the attorney/agent on either side of the table, this is probably what I would suggest so that everyone can save face.

As an SMU fan it stinks. As a business decision, it makes the most sense.

agreed as to the business aspect…still doesn't address the future with any bold move. Maybe we can get Dickerson back on his influential horse involved in the recruitment of our next coach…..

Wait, is this actually going on? Has anyone at SMU said this is coming?

If he does stay, I hope we hire better recruiters and start winning games.

I really don't think any decision will be made until after the UCF game.

I agree that no decision will be made until after UCF, but everything I am hearing leads me to believe that an extension is coming. And if it is, this is how you structure it so that all parties save face.

I thought this was actually true for a second based on the thread title and it ruined my day.

If this is what's coming, well, yeah, it's going to be really bad year for us

I'll never root against SMU, ever. But if we don't beat UCF on Saturday, then I hope they beat us 45-0 to show the CoC that it's time to make a change

The original contract that SMU gave JJ was for 5 years 2008-2012 seasons. I believe he is about to complete the first year of the 2 year extension we gave him but I don't know any of the details about "after the first year" of it...

Really not sure that matters anymore, I think for the CofC it's about loyalty to June and what he's done to turn this around and ultimately not burning 2 mil.

It really really sucks, but win or lose, no matter the score, everyone should be readying themselves for June to be back next year.

It looks like if June comes back the the fanbase will be split even further than it is now. That would not be good for the school.

Is that even possible?

I worry much more about attendance - no P5 invite will be forthcoming if we average less fans than we already do.

SMU and/or CofC need to be thinking about doing everything possible to increase attendance. With JJ coming back, and a very tough OOC again, I find that a hard sell to make.

If we average 19k (announced) now, and with tons of diehard fans saying they'll walk if JJ is extended, I just don't see this as a good move.

It's all conjecture anyway, but my best educated guess.

Even packing the house with 32-35k people each game would not be enough to warrant P5 consideration when B12 averages 60k per game...They'll want full house/TV market control (in other words we would have to deliver Dallas market, which would be a tough sell in the Big 12...)
