2 year extension with no buyout after 1 year/ salary reducedModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: 2 year extension with no buyout after 1 year/ salary redI wonder if it does play out this way, if there would be any way we could hire a coach in waiting, who can get the recruiting ball rolling for Jones imminent departure. If SMU keeps June through at least next season, that would be ideal, but I would guess extremely unlikely.
Beat the hell out of anybody!
Re: 2 year extension with no buyout after 1 year/ salary red
Obviously you're not paying attention to bball. We'll be relevant next year at the latest. With one and done kids in bball, it doesn't take, nor do you have 5 years to become good. Fball us a 5 year time horizon with the right staff and infrastructure in place. #NewLobCity
Re: 2 year extension with no buyout after 1 year/ salary red
It's not as hard as June has made it sound and look. He cleared a lot of hurdles out of the way here and if the admin/AD can lay out a plan then the support will be there. And what SMU wants, SMU gets.
Re: 2 year extension with no buyout after 1 year/ salary redRecruiting can't really get any worse than it is now, so who cares? Virtually none of our current commits have other FBS options anyway.
Re: 2 year extension with no buyout after 1 year/ salary red
Larry brown is two years in, we're talking about a possible tourny appearance this year, for sure one next year. To be really relevant you have to make it a couple years in a row and a good run or two. If you just make it one year you could just be a cinderalla story and not an actual power. That's where I'm getting 5 years from
Re: 2 year extension with no buyout after 1 year/ salary red"I've been worried lately that it might play out the way you laid it out.
If it does play out this way, I am very worried about next years recruiting ." Not sure recruiting could get much worse. We have a class of players that hardly anyone else is interested in. Wouldn't take much to duplicate that next year. I don't think we'd have any difficulty in getting a similar recruiting class. Let's see, full ride scholly to SMU or pay your way as a walk on somewhere else. I'll bet the farm we could get 24 2* recruits without a problem.
Re: 2 year extension with no buyout after 1 year/ salary redI don't think that the talent on the team is as bad as others make it out to be, and have been adamant about that since the start of the season.
That said: 1) One of the reasons you commit a lot of penalties is because you are getting beat athletically. That could also be because you are too inexperienced to anticipate the moves of the other team. Either way, it is a sign that you aren't as good as your opponent. 2) Special teams blocking is an indication of the depth of the team. Bad blocking = not great depth, and not enough athleticism to perform well in space. The performance of Loftus on the first punt of every game up until he got replaced was just crazy, though. 3) Defense giving up big plays is usually a result of someone getting beat in the secondary or linebackers not doing well against the run. We all know Parks has his weaknesses and 28 isn't quite ready yet. The youth looks great in practice, but haven't shown up in games. 4) Again, you usually turn the ball over or drop passes when you are doing too much because you are over-matched athletically. Same thing with dropped interceptions. You are having to work so hard just to get to the point where you can make a play, that you can't make the play. On the other hand, here is an interesting breakdown of some of the positions we have struggled in: Safety: Sr: Scott, Jr: Greenbauer So: Randolph Fr: Crosby, D Richardson, Law, Justice We have really struggled since loosing Greenbauer. No upper classmen to replace him. Lots of talent there, but it is all young. CB: Sr: Acker, Parks, Gray Jr: So: Hubert, Fr: Montes, Montgomery, H Richardson, JR Richardson Nobody with experience to replace Parks. Again, for some reason we are young at this position. OL: SR: Ashcraft, Gottschalk JR: Hughes SO: Lasecki, Reich, Rice, Weeks FR: Briggs, Chamagua, Saena, Fister, Holloway, McCarty, Myers, Walling Ashcraft was a bust. What is up with the lack of upperclassmen? In a lot of cases, we are having to either play seniors or go young at the positions. Not because the young players are beating out the more experienced players, but because there are no more experienced players. I don't think June will get an extension - they would have done it before the season because of the recruiting pressures. There is probably a good chance he is out after this season. However, I don't think the next coach is getting a team devoid of talent. The team might be young, but The team stepping on the field next season will be skilled: CB: H Richardson, JR Ricahrdson, Montes S: Greenbauer, Randolph, Richardson, Justice, Dickerson OLB: Sanders, Seals, Longoria MLB: Yenga, Horton DL: Wright, Barnes, Minor, Hollie, Wood, McCleneghen, Nabushosi, Smith OT: Briggs, Myers, Reich, Weeks OG: Rice, McCarty C: Lasecki QB: Burcham, Cassel RB: Line, Nlemchi, Shead, Simms, Lagasse, Lancaster WR: Gaines, Halverson, Joseph, Deion, Stewart, Taylor I think those players have all shown major glimpses of their talent in practice. If anyone has been out during the spring or fall and has a different opinion, please say so. But there is talent coming back on the team next year for whomever is coaching here. We just obviously need to get the young players to perform better when given the opportunity.
Re: 2 year extension with no buyout after 1 year/ salary redI disagree. While I have not seen practices, my guess is they look good because they are going against players with similar talent. When they play against a good team in a real game, the talent disparity shows up. I think we are playing at the talent level we have, mid AAC.
Re: 2 year extension with no buyout after 1 year/ salary redlisting a bunch of players doesn't mean jack if they don't perform when given the chance. There are few guys stepping up early like Jagared Davis, Darius Johnson, Kenneth Acker, Zach Line, Taylor Thompson, Stephon Sanders, Marquis Frazier, Emmanual Sanders, Aldrick Robinson, Kyle Padron, Randall Joyner, Compare Padron as true freshman who lead SMU to Division Championship and Hawaii Bowl win for example to Burchum a redshirt freshman who was the first QB to be shutout in June Jones' career Other guys who stepped up quickly after switching positions and/or called on to replace graduating Seniors -Jeremy Johnson, Pope, Markus Hunt, Gttschalk. Sterling Moore and Richard Crawford were JUCOs thrown right into the fire but responded pretty darn quick. I'll say Yenga definitely took a step up. Beau Barnes is an example of a kid who had a nice year after Senior graduated but will be a Senior next year. We were counting on about 5-6 young guys to step up on defense-where are they? I have hope for some of the WRs but got very little this year from them. This will be the third year of stair-stepping down

Re: 2 year extension with no buyout after 1 year/ salary redi actually thought receiver was a bright spot this year. Very few dropped balls and lots of nice catches.
Re: 2 year extension with no buyout after 1 year/ salary redyeah throw Darius Joseph into the young player stepping up when Senior graduated. Holman too but he's graduating

Re: 2 year extension with no buyout after 1 year/ salary red
I think June 'resigns' If SMU doesn't force a resignation, like WF, then the investors in the CoC make bad investments... and they arent in the CoC because they make bad investments. It is almost like June was a safe, bearish portfolio. it has reached it's potential, now time to reallocate funds. time for him to go - and I hope everyone can at least agree on that.
Re: 2 year extension with no buyout after 1 year/ salary red
I agree with you on the point that very few of the younger players have stepped up to the challenge. Padron had a really good line, and Sanders and McNeil to make plays for him. We don't have any of that on this team. Burcham in practice is ahead of where Padron was his freshman year, and is more talented. All I am saying is that the talent is there. For whatever reason, it isn't showing up in the games. I think the Scout and Rivals guys would agree that there is talent out there with the young players. Like I said earlier, I don't know if tackling is the answer, but for whatever reason how we practice isn't preparing the kids for game time. our "fog of war" seems to be a lot worse than most other teams in the country.
Re: 2 year extension with no buyout after 1 year/ salary red
agree on all points
Re: 2 year extension with no buyout after 1 year/ salary redYeah well the Rivals guy gave SMU's recruiting class an A-. He's young and naive. I doubt Scout's analyst would agree wth l you except for the assistant who played under June Jones whose from Florida and doesn't have much experience around Texas. -Look its no shock we are playing at or below the level of Rice, UTSA, Texas State and NTSU-that's who we largely compete with in recruiting with this staff
