What's the better job: Wake or SMU?Thinking about this in light of the reported interest of Wake Forest in Chad Morris and that hail mary internet rumor that we are interested in him.
Being in the ACC, I think there's a national assumption that Wake is the better job. But neither is a destination job- and if you're looking to get the next rung up on the coaching ladder- where can you recruit easier and (hopefully) win faster- Wake or SMU? At Wake you've got to compete in a conference with FSU, Miami, Virginia Tech, Clemson, while at SMU you've got great facilities (relative to the rest of the conference) in a great state for recruiting and can (theoretically) compete with anyone in the American. The pay is about the same- I think Grobe was making $2.3M a year at Wake. I always thought Morris would have better P5 offers after this season and we wouldn't have a prayer. But if Wake is the main competition for his services then we could be in better shape than we think, IF RGT, Hart, and the CoC see the light and cut ties with June this month. Chad Morris would be an absolutely amazing hire for us, but I'm not holding my breath. 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
Re: What's the better job: Wake or SMU?Wake for the same reason Art Briles left his alma mater UH for Baylor

Re: What's the better job: Wake or SMU?
What reason is that? Baylor was able to pay a lot more than UH ever could. Not sure the same discrepancy exists between SMU and Wake 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
Re: What's the better job: Wake or SMU?As someone who lives in ACC country, Wake is almost an impossible job. Your NC prospects would rather go to UNC, NCSt, Duke, and maybe even ECU before Wake. Actually, most would rather head south and play for Clemson or USC.
Wake gets great fan support for the size of the school, due mostly to the lack of entertainment options in Winston-Salem. But Wake will ALWAYS be a basketball-first school, even when their fb team is competitive. Having said that, David Cutcliffe has shown what can be done at a small private ACC school, so there is precedent that it CAN be done. But can it be sustained? I think that is the $64k question, and one that we may see play out at Duke. Is success in the ACC worth more than success in the American? Likely yes. But would it be easier to sustain said success in the American vs ACC? I think it is easier at SMU. Add in the recruiting ground in Texas and Morris' HS connections, and I think SMU is a no-brainer over Wake.
Re: What's the better job: Wake or SMU?
Briles is a Tech and ACU alum.
Re: What's the better job: Wake or SMU?P5 job>G5 job
Better fan support, better competition, better exposure, playoff access, etc They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: What's the better job: Wake or SMU?also, let us not pretend that either school would be the final destination for MOrris. he is a Malzahn type talent, and would likely only use either job as a stepping stone to eventual SEC or P5 job (other than Wake I mean).
Re: What's the better job: Wake or SMU?almost impossible except it wasn't since Grobe won ACC and went to BCS Bowl

Briles played at UH. Remember his parents died in car crash coming to see SMU game in Cotton Bowl. Then he went back to Lubbock after they died "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

Re: What's the better job: Wake or SMU?
Yeah, Mangino took KU to an Orange Bowl as well, but I'd argue SMU might be the better job there as well, especially if you're just looking to climb the coaching ladder 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
Re: What's the better job: Wake or SMU?
Totally agree. I am completely fine with someone like Morris using us for 2-3 years, winning 10+ games, and then bailing for a bigger job. Although I'd like to think living in Dallas and making $2M a year might make it a little harder to leave for Starkville/Fayetteville/Stillwater/wherever 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient

Read the last paragraph: "Morris’ best bet would be a job akin to Texas Tech—in Texas, the Great Plains or Southwest. He’ll find that fit eventually, perhaps even this winter. But Wake Forest isn’t it." S...M...U
Re: What's the better job: Wake or SMU?
true, but that is why I added the part about "sustained" success. Wake has had a losing record for the past 5 seasons. "The unquestioned highlight of Grobe's career came in 2006. He was named the AP national coach of the year after leading Wake Forest to its first Atlantic Coast Conference championship since 1970, winning a school-record 11 victories and earning a berth in the Orange Bowl. That was the second of his five bowl games with the school, and the first of three straight from 2006-08 — the only time the Demon Deacons have reached the postseason in three consecutive years. http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory/ ... t-21073403
