We were on probation 5/8 semesters I was there, usually for just throwing a party and some freshman would come back to the dorms drunk. Then we'd get on further probation after throwing more parties. SMU is a joke

Fraternities do a lot more good than most of you haters could ever imagine. No, not all are the same, yes some need to die, no we don't always make good decisions, yes you'll have problems when you put a bunch of 18 year old idiots in a room with 500 beers, but at least from my perspective, I was shaped into the person I am today because of my experience and I couldn't be more grateful for that. The friendships I made, and the bonds I share are stronger than with any other friends I've ever had or that I probably ever will. Yes, I understand that not everyone had the same experience as me, even within my own fraternity, and I wouldn't expect everyone to, but as a whole, my experience changed me for the better.

Lori White can so suck a fat [deleted] for all the ridiculous fear mongering and destruction she's done to the Greek system at SMU. I'm well aware that times are a changing (I'm not naïve), but I hope for future generations sake, Greeks will still be around if I ever have kids (which is a terrifying thought)

Ok, rant over.

I don't think there are many if any haters here. I and others mentioned that we are SMU fraternity men as well. It's just a dying institution that's all.

I'm having trouble naming a major contributor to our athletic department over many decades who wasn't in a fraternity.

You're right, and that plays out nationally as well. Over 70% of donations to all universities come from Greek members. But as the Greek numbers decline I believe that percentage will decline as well. Student's priorities are changing. SMU will be one of the last universities that holds on to the old model of student life.

After being around a lot of USC students and grads while in LA, Greek life is HUGE there too. Just an educated guess but I imagine Greek life is big at most private universities.

Fraternities aren't dying at SMU by a long shot - nor should they be. Go to any school without fraternities, and they do the same thing - group up with other folks like them - nothing wrong with it - it is just human nature.

in any event - our Greek system is a strength. The out of state kids prefer us to TCU because the Greek system is a joke over there.

And fraternities have always been kicked off campus and then let back on - for about 40 years its been that way. No new news.

I worked during my undergrad so no greek like for me, but I would encourage my kids to do it if it's their thing. Just wasn't for me.

yeah that's what I'm most concerned about-the alcohol/liquor chugging peer pressure especially by "grownups" toward pledges. With .8 liquor limit I like to take a little bit more time reaching the limit

GDIs drink and do drugs just like any fraternity kid. They're just harder to label. This is a dumb argument.
