Conference: There is no comparison. The ACC is better than the AAC. Advantage Wake

Recruiting: Wake has a lot of traditional recruiting ties to my part of Florida - so I know a bunch of kids that went there and some that played there. That being said, all of Wake's traditional recruiting territory is farmed by the entire SEC, ACC, SunBelt, BigTen and the eastern schools of the AAC. I know everyone recruits at least a little in Texas, but Wake is in a dogfight for every kid. Texas has more players with FBS offers every year than every other state. Advantage SMU.

Fan Base: The story of Dallas is,"Win and they will come." Advantage Wake

Campus: I love Wake's campus, but as a selling point having the city of Dallas 10 minutes down the road can be a big plus over Winston-Salem. Further, he has to live here. There is more for him and his family to do in Dallas and still have the safety and security of suburban living. Advantage SMU

Upside: Wake is currently down in the dumps and the road to the top of that conference is a really tough. He would have to go through Miami, Clemson, Florida State, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech (throwing a pure option offense into anyone's season causes havoc). This doesn't even take into account traditional rival UNC, rising program Duke or trips to the frigid north - Boston College or Pittsburgh in November. SMU is light years ahead of where we were before JJ, but there is the opportunity to win the conference faster, with fewer recruiting classes, than in the ACC. If his goal is to fill out his resume with HC experience, those wins against SMU's history would really standout. This would make him more appealing to a P5 school. Advantage SMU

I am not totally biased (wait...Yes, I am). I really like Wake and root for them to succeed. For this job I would choose SMU. If it was hoops, I would choose wake.

by this logic SMU ought to drive South about 100 miles and just outbid Baylor for Art Briles. Most people would have said Baylor was one of the worst BCS jobs in the country when Briles took it because he could never win the Big 12 South with UT, A&M, OU, OSU and Tech every year. Its not a better job than Wake

I don't think you can generalize this. It depends on the circumstances of the coach. SMU would be better for some Wake for others. Someone like Morris, who has Texas ties would be better suited for SMU. Someone with ties to the southeast would be better suited for Wake. Either job would likely be a short term stop if they are successful.

Two things:

1. To quote that great, Beiber bashing, philosophizer Keychain Johnson. "Come one man!" Don't interrupt my delusions  . I find them infinitely more palatable than reality.
2. If the job is just the launching point to another job. He can make a bigger splash quickly at SMU, which eases his way to the next job. If he wants to make a home for 15 years Wake is the tougher road, but better job.

you folks are misunderstanding. It is a better job for MORRIS - not necessarily a better job for someone else. The question is can you make Wake recover relative to their competition (other ACC schools) faster than you could make SMU into a "power" (and i use that word loosely) in comparison to other AAC schools - such that you gain the next rung up job from the job you do.

For MORRIS it would be wiser to go to SMU, since that is an easier rescue than Wake - and since part of his value add is a deep knowledge of Texas recruiting. Wake is one of only 2 schools that is smaller than SMU in all of D-1 football - and it is overshadowed by three other North carolina schools - all 4 of which sit in a state which has a TV market smaller than DFW. Those three ACC schools will remain better than wake in everything - even basketball - from here on out. There is no reason for anyone to go to Wake over those schools. There are far fewer schools fighting over waaaay more athletes here in Texas - and SMU only has to beat the likes of Temple with whatever athletes they get. The SMU job is a great job for anyone willing to work. Its a gold mine, particularly for a coach that wants to move up to the next rung in Texas if possible.

Baylor has the advantage of being smack dab in the middle of the biggest recruiting hotbed in the nation. Wake does not.

Also, football is always king in Texas as opposed to Tobacco Road and especially Wake which has traditionally been a basketball school.

Again, Stallion- if you wanted to win fast and work your way up the coaching ladder, would you go to SMU in the AAC (and back in Texas where you have tons of ties) or Wake Forest in the ACC and go toe-to-toe with FSU, Miami, VT, Clemson every year?

Wake is the better job right now, but SMU has much more upside.

Morris "very, very happy" at Clemson, per Radakovich;
staff raises could come after bowl game

ps: interesting: "I think that was something Dabo certainly looked at when he became a head coach, and saw that was a good recipe as it relates to that particular point in his career," Radakovich said, on Swinney taking less money to help pay his assistants more"

saw this article in our (Charleston's) paper this morning. Of course, Clemson recognizes Morris is not going to be leaving for anything other than a head coaching job...but my guess is that he's learned at Clemson that when he does take a H.C. position, he will want to make sure he has enough of a budget to hire top flight assistants

Charleston Pony he seems like he would be a real upgrade for us,
but would SMU and a huge raise appeal to him?

He's a Texas guy so I'd like to think there could be some interest, but after being at Clemson it would be like returning to a H.S. gig...but money talks and if A$M is his dream job (just speculating there), SMU would seem to offer a good opportunity for him to make a splash as a head coach at the Division I level and re-establish his Texas connections. Clemson people are saying nobody has asked anyone at the school for permission to talk to him, but we know how these things are done so that doesn't mean much. It's all up to the money guys because I doubt SMU is going to make the kind of financial commitment that would be required. I'm guessing the same $2 mil that JJ is getting and more for the assistants than what is being paid now...not to mention any buyout issue with JJ. I have no inside information so someone that knows his wife and family situation would have a much better idea if this is even a possibility. People under estimate the influence these guy's wives can have on career decisions, not to mention the timing of moving school age children. Suffice it to say I don't see any stability issues with the coaching staff at Clemson so he can be here for a while if that's what he wants.

Agreed.
I suppose Willie Fritz would be much cheaper, but probably a bigger risk.

Yep...comfort level for the family is critical.
Probably the reason Patterson has stayed at TCU.
