An insight into the student's mind

Postby abezontar » Thu Aug 18, 2005 8:00 pm

We had our first day of Law School oreintation today. In my small section there are two of us that are first years that went to SMU for undergrad, and one of our 2L advisors also went to SMU for undergrad. Both of them started and finished after football moved to back to campus (i still remember the games in the Cotton Bowl.) The 2L advisor was leading us on a tour of campus and talked to us about how great the boulevard was and what a great tailgate it was, then told us how he had never missed a boulevard but had also never made it to a game because the team sucked. The other student piped up and reiterated what the 2L had said. I was at a loss for words. Thinking about it now though how do we get students to come to games who are proud never to have been to one? We always talk about getting the students in the stadium, but if it is a point of pride NOT to go what do we do?

Find a way to sell beer at the game...(I kid!) When I was there, we weren't good at football either but there was definitely a decent sized group of students that went our freshman year and then after that it was kinda expected you be there if you were greek...had to show the letters...
I didn't realize it was now "cool" to not go to the games. That's sad.

try winning, it'll guarantee students in the seats for sure -
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

I hope you got that 2L advisor's name. I want his/her a** FIRED! That's unforgiveable. I'd like to take him/her behind the woodshed. A serious a** whippin' is in order.

What good would that do? The only reason he felt that way was because the group (frat) he was in as an undergrad felt that way. The same is true of the 1L girl in my section, she only acted that way because her friends (sorority) said it was cool. I'm not trying to blame the greek system, because I think the same would be true for most student organizations on campus. There are very few organizations on campus that actively care about atheletics on campus.

What Mr.M 65 is saying is.... How can someone of that thought be given the job to teach the new recruits.

It is poison to the system. It sounds like is comes from the Faculty or the one who picks these student reps.

A rep or clerk or guide should be picked that is a FAN. a Fan of sports, the Meadows School, Law School and the Cox School of B.

Where is the responsibility????

You guys floor me....the students have NEVER really been interested in the games!!!!!!! Partying before the games..YES!...Partying during the games..YES!!...Hanging out in the Stadium Club, completely IGNORING the game..YES!! It is still a rich kids party / social school, with the chance for GREAT contacts, an excellent education...and LOADS of fun along the way...but, football is not really part of the equation, never really has been......PS: Where are ALL theose students NOW?? As young alums, 35 year old families of 5, 50 year old business tycoons...guess what? They STILL ain't at the games......get over it!!

Hix, when I was SMU, we cared. Or at least it seemed that way, Most folks went to the games, heck, I only missed ONE home game in four years at SMU. Went to most of the road games too. (Only going to Austin was any fun. Everywhere else blew.)

Winning helps, but it is not a cure all. There still needs to be some caring beyond the basics.

You CAN try to have him removed from a position of influence.

That type of leadership is as wrong as two guys kissing.

..we "went" to all the games, too....but, were we really "at" the games??? We seemed more interested in trying to kidnap the baylor Bear, eat chicken fried steaks, drink Big O's, go to "Too Manys" while in Waco...up and down 6th. street in Austin.....pass the pipe in Lubbock....YES, there was a game, but that was just another freakin excuse to party somewhere, the game was sort of secondary.....I became A MUCH BETTER fan the day I graduated, in 1981.....long live Norm Revis.

Hey, Einstein...you can get 'fired' from any position, whether it's one for pay or not.

I graduated this past december and i never missed a boulevard experience, in fact its the reason i stayed for that extra semester for another football season, however i only went to games with a quality opponent (Kansas, Tech, Ok St, TCU...i also went to the San Jose St. game...i just had a feeling we would break the losing streak). And even then, whether we won or lost really didn't matter to me. If we won than great.....if we lost, we were expecting in so it didn't matter.

I agree with Hixsonto in that I consider myself a way better fan after graduation. Like he said SMU is a party/social school that fields a football team.

I have never seen the issue of being a fan or not come up anywhere for any position on campus. I guess when less than 1% of students truly give a damn then you dont' worry about it.

Ya just don't get it, do ya? I don't care whether they're a fan or not. If they are, great. If they're not, their choice, too. But if they're showing folks around campus and they're not a fan then they just need to STFU when it comes to athletics.
