To clarify, the NCAA starts your clock as soon as you enroll in a university. The NCAA exhausts your eligibility as soon as you compete in an NCAA sport only for that sport. Paulus was able to play that season because he had one year left on his clock. He was not eligible after that season because at that point his clock expired. As a result he burned 3 seasons of eligibility because his clock ran out. The NCAA will only grant extensions on the clock for Mormon missions, injuries, or exceptional circumstances. The NCAA will grant extra seasons of eligibility if a player has a season ending injury early on in the season.
