June Jones (mis)quoted
Coach Jones has been catching a fair bit of heat for what he allegedly said to the announcers on ESPN. Here's the exact transcript.
June Jones told us yesterday that they have offered him a contract extension. He says he probably will sign it.
And I asked him, "What do you mean by that?"
Basically, without saying it Grace, he was saying, "Look, I've got a little leverage here. I've done something with this program nobody else could do prior to that. They're paying me a lot of money, and I just want to make sure the school is committed."
Yeah, absolutely.
The school has a lot of money, but he wants an indoor facility ... some other things.
His point is: Are they going to be serious about investing in the program from a football standpoint? And that's, I think, what he wants to see.
"Hey, I'l sign the contract, but I also want to make sure you're in the foxhole will me and we're going to build this thing to a point where we have success on an ongoing basis."

Re: June Jones (mis)quoted
That really doesn't make it any better.
Sad that he is putting us through this after what he did to us with ASU. He really does not respect SMU or our people. I lost a lot of respect for him after that incident, and I am losing what little respect I have for him every time he opens his mouth through the press. Leigh Steinberg is a cancer.

Re: June Jones (mis)quoted
I personally don't have any problem with this, and I don't see how that's demeaning the school at all. Contract negotiation is the one time you have some extra stroke, so I would be trying to use whatever leverage I had were I in the same position.
On one hand, I would have liked to see the team go to a 5th straight bowl, as that may have forced the issue of program upgrades rather than being mired in the status quo.

A simple " I do not discuss those things publically, we have a game to win today and hope to reach our 5th straight bowl", might have been more appropriate. And that is only if he was asked. If he offered it on his own that was very wrong.

Well, I'd like to see that JJ is committed to SMU! I haven't seen anything from him in the last couple of years except him crapping on us whenever he can---doesn't recruit, doesn't like Peruna, would rather be other places.......he needs to leave and not let the door hit him in his grass skirt on the way out!!

Re: June Jones (mis)quoted
Is paying him 2.5 million a serious commitment for the results we have gotten. It seems to me the one who is not seriously committed is June Jones. He is committed to doing 100% of what a college coach need to do. And he is not committed to SMU as a school. He makes the program an "us against them" where the SMU fans are the "them". He does not do it the right way.
Larry Brown is not only committed as a coach he is committed to SMU. He only speaks positively about how great he thinks SMU is and that we can be special. June has never ever said one thing positive about SMU as a school. Beyond his results that is how you get fans invested in a program not by sticking it to them every chance you get like June does.

Re: June Jones (mis)quoted
With all the new buildings on campus, he wants an IPF
Also, any leftover academic
restrictions above the NCAA requirements lifted
We pay him 2 mil a year not 2.5. Also, I NEVER hear anything from the haters about the 2 8-5
seasons we've had. Is 8 - 5 above or below mediocre
OK, I'll go duck and cover now.

"The lights are problematic"
Three days later: half million in new lights are up.
That little anecdote should be all anyone needs to see how things wanted are given.
Someone else posted on here the best perspective on the IPF ive seen. Want one? Done. Here's where we can put it. "Yeah but I dont want it there.."

Unlike Larry Brown, June doesn't know what it takes to win at the highest level because he never has. I have always been amazed how June has such an ego for not having ever won anything, and yet one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time, is always very humble in any interview he gives.

If Planostang would quit ducking and covering he might end up seeing the facts every now and then.
