are all schools that have had multiple 9-10+ win/conference championship teams at the non-BCS level during June's tenure without this 7 win regular season glass ceiling. There is no obstacle that should keep SMU from reaching those levels that I can see. SMU has had better facilities, higher coaching salary and more financial resources than just about all of them during June's tenure

What's the different in "a little leverage" or "all the leverage", you have it or you don't. Two negotiating parties can't both have leverage. Basically, The king thinks he is more important than the kingdom. No other coach in America does this in the media; SMU is the only one pathetic enough to put up with it. No more excuses.

Going public with internal issues while you still under contract with your employer is not a good idea.

It was a 3 hour game, safe to say that is not the entire transcript. My impression was that it was the part where they were talking about leverage.

Here is the actual ESPN3 telecast so people can listen to what was said and get an accurate account.

the way the webmasters on PF and the editors on the pay sites sugarcoat the state of the football program to increase traffic and subscriptions is becoming nauseating

On one hand, I would have liked to see the team go to a 5th straight bowl, as that may have forced the issue of program upgrades rather than being mired in the status quo.

Also, going public with those statements shows lack of respect for your employer.

Why can't JJ just say "no comment" when discussing contract negotiations like Rick Hart did in the DMN story? I pretty much lost all respect I had for him after the ASU debacle, and his recent use of the media to gain "leverage" after a bad season is continuing classless behavior. It would be one thing if this guy was working his tail off and hitting the recruiting trail hard, but he isn't. We have fewer wins, fewer people in the stands, and no notable recruits coming in to help. Larry Brown should be happy because JJ is very quickly making us a basketball school (which I'm fine with).

The football program is in much better shape than it was before Jones arrived, and the basketball program is in much better shape than it was before Brown arrived, and for that, I'm thankful. Neither program where I'd like it to be, but being a fan is a lot more fun now than it was 10 years ago.

Why wouldn't it be appropriate to initiate contract discussions? Never mind whether he should be back -- if he thinks he wants to stay, he needs to have a contract so he and his staff can tell recruits' parents that the staff will be there. Standard operating procedure, isn't it?

Lotus, I couldn't disagree with you more. The Head Football Coach is the face and voice of the football program at every single level. That is why the media guys interview the coaches before the game so they have things to say between plays. The two broadcasters had probably never set foot on our campus before yesterday. They get information/insight about the teams from the coaches. No reporter ever asks Brad Sutton to schedule an interview so he can share his opinions about the football team. The only time an AD will talk with the media about the football program is when the question arises if the coach should be fired or to get the school's reaction to a problem/scandal.

As far as the contact negotiations in public goes... It is, to say the least, unprofessional. Any information you release has the potential to embarrass the other party, further the school's policy is a self imposed gag order. So all information comes from one side, which leads to dissension and trouble. Imagine just for a moment if Hart said,"We offered an extension to JJ, but we are thinking of rescinding because of the team's performance this year, his unreasonable demands and his inability to maintain positive interpersonal relationships within the department." How would JJ look to the Dallas community and college football world at large? How would the school look? What would JJ say to his [Gary Patterson] buddy, Dale Hanson at the very first opportunity? This isn't discussed publicly because there are too many downsides for both parties.

JJ has been a HC for a long time and at multiple levels. He should know better.

Webmaster - Thanks for posting the transcript. Unfortunately this doesn't prove that JJ was misquoted. This is just the transcript from what the ESPN talking heads said about his comments. If you posted a transcript of the original interview or the reporter's notes, then we would know if he was misquoted. All the transcript you provided indicates is that he opened his mouth and said stupid things about his employer and the program he is responsible for.

OK y'all go to 10:45 in the video and start listening. That's what a woman texted me yesterday about the serious/committed comments. Also Pasch tells all that SMU is still trending up.
