I thought we would finish the season with anywhere from 5-7 wins, and was hopeful we would get 8. Aside from Houston, we were indeed competitive in all of the conference games. My only complaint is that while Burcham did prove himself a capable QB in the last game, we did not adequately replace the injured players because in the end we did not win against Houston and UCF. Adequately replacing them to me would mean that they step in and the team does not miss a beat. We are staying home this bowl season and that is because we did not have the depth to overcome those injuries and that falls on the head coach. If June and his staff just put a minimal effort in recruiting this thing would really rev up. I don't think our next coach will be as good at motivating the players and devising a strategy on game days and that is why I am all the more frustrated. At the same time if talent precludes you from winning a game before the game even starts, then you really do need to make a change. June, please make the necessary changes. I am a big fan, but you really need to help yourself. As big of a fan of June as I am and as patient as I am in general, I am a much bigger SMU fan and want to win big. Let's do this. I know we will with or without June! S-M-U! S-M-U! S-M-U!

The issues going forward for me are several. First, finishing in the middle the pack each year will not alter our trajectory and limit improvements in recruiting. The biggest challenge is fan support, especially the students and local alums. I concede that winning will improve attendance, but until then it will not solve the lack of spirit and enthusiasm, while we rebuild again.

JJ bears major responsibility in this area. I wish he recognized that fact and put energy into winning the hearts of students, who are easily distracted and fail to see their role in turning the Hilltop games into must attend and stay events. I love the Boulevard, but the game day experience does not translate into movement into Ford.

Perhaps I am showing my age, but school spirit is not optional or a subject of debate. It is what students and alums do.

In retrospect, Rutgers was not very good, and that is a game a decent team should win. Houston was a much better team than anyone anticipated coming into the season. but I think expecting the team to win against either Cincy, Houston, or Tech (with a new QB) is valid.

On the woulda-shoulda-coulda index, we should have won 7 games this year based on the quality of the teams coming in and the improved offense. I won't hold the team accountable for not reaching my overly-optimistic 9 win prediction, but I am certainly disappointed that we didn't get to 7.

I don't know what to expect from this team next year. Some young guys got experience, but we are loosing some very good players. I still don't see quality depth on this team. I see some proven good players, some players that could be good and a lot players with "potential" that may or may not develop into solid players. Can we get lucky again next year and play five teams ranked over 100?

Remember that a large part of the seniors that are leaving (except GG of course) were either 2 or 3 star talent in Rivals/Scout when recruited. Our current kids are about the same albeit more 3 stars in the mix. We should be alright, the kids will get bigger and the key is our lines are going to be bigger/better (defensive and offensive). Prescott Line is going to be just like Zach Line next year, and with our O line it means we get our running game back. Burcham will do great, and will be able to manage some productive drives. Of course not a prolific rusher like Garrett (and GG had to run the ball due to lack of RBs), Burcham won't need to rush the ball himself since we get KC Nlemchi back as well as Prescott Line with star performance and Traylon Shead back as well.

This year's Ponies were so inconsistent -- not just from game-to-game but from play-to-play -- that it's hard to what if this bunch. We had a chance to beat Texas Tech, Cincinnati, Rutgers and UCF. We were in the TCU game for awhile and I would have liked to seen what GG could do against Cougar High.

It wasn't just injuries -- though they certainly played a role in our demise -- dropped passes, missed assignments, inconsistent defense, turnovers, a weak running game and an overall failure to execute killed us.

What really intrigued me was how we came out with fire against UCF and changed the pace of our offense. If we could slow the pace of our offense when we want to, and quicken it when we need to the Mustangs might have something.
