First, regarding the OOC schedule - yes, we should probably make it easier than 1 SEC, 3 Big 12 opponents as it was scheduled this year. I don't care about attendance - that was a ridiculous schedule for an AAC school. However, Rick Hart has already addressed this matter and talked about our scheduling going forward of 1 big-time game (Michigan/TAMU), 1 like-minded BCS school (Wake, Duke, etc), local rivals TCU and UNT, or an FCS school.

This solution is probably not what JJ wants - he would prefer 4 FCS schools I think, so he could start 4-0 no matter who he recruits. But I believe that Hart's plan is a good one, and in any given year we can end up 3-1, 2-2, or 1-3.

Second, regading the IPF - this is a RED HERRING. June is redirecting the argument from "why don't you recruit" to "I need an IPF to recruit". This is a politician/lawyer trick, and I am sure it is being directed by Leigh S.

Is the IPF a nice thing to have? Of course. Does it help recruit players? Somewhat, but not necessarily. Do we need it to compete? Heck no - just ask the many BCS schools going bowling this year who don't have or need an IPF. Too many to list here, but as long as the IPF is in the works, I am okay with it.

Bottom line IMHO - Jones has no one to blame for the recruiting woes but himself and his staff. Period.

PonyinNC: I agree that although the IPF does not "make the players better", it does signal to recruits how serious the program is. If we were in a recruiting battle with TCU, and the kid compares programs and has to choose between a) A school in DFW with a proven track record (a coach with 9 seasons with 10 wins or more in recent years) NFL caliber facilities (brand new stadium, IPF, weight rooms, sports medicine), with many players getting drafted to the NFL each year, at BCS Big 12 Conference; or b) an up and coming program from a school in DFW with decent facilities (fairly new stadium, no IPF but decent quality practice fields, okay weight rooms etc.) with players getting drafted into the NFL, at a non BCS AAC.

You need every advantage you can get, and although the IPF won't make the players better, it does signal them that the program is committed to getting to the top, and being part of a non BCS program that is up and coming and on fire excites players since they will become part of the reason why a program does get invited to the BCS.

FTHP- I agree that the IPF is more of a "status symbol" than an actual necessity. And it does signal to recruits that SMU is committed to spending on football (much like Crum center was a necessity for Doherty and signaled that SMU BB was committed to BB).

But if we aren't doing the necessary legwork in recruiting (like going to local HS's, developing relationships with those coaching staffs, doing in-home visits, etc) - the IPF doesn't help AT ALL!

That's right.

The work needs to be done...otherwise you wouldn't get top recruits to come play (unless our house was the Cowboys Stadium lol)

Like I said before, if the problem is that we need assistant coaches that are better at recruiting or an IPC, ask Larry Brown what has the biggest impact on fixing the recruiting issue.

If it is anywhere close to 50-50, we would be a lot better off spending maybe 500K extra per year to put together the following staff:

HC: Jones
OC/QB: Mumme
RB: Suan
OL: New Stud Recruiter
WR: Phillips
DC: Mason
DL: Hill
LB: New Stud Recruiter
Sec: Odum
ST: New stud recruiter

500K per year should cover buyouts from firing and the salaries of the new guys. IMHO, a lot more impactfull expenditure than tens of millions on an IPC.

Set up a crap non-conference schedule, get our recruiting up to the 3/4 star level combined with the great work Jones, Mumme, Mason, and Hill do with scouting talent at our camps. Get to ten wins, increase attendance and revenue significantly, and then invest in the IPC.

TCU's IPF cost $7M...and it's real nice.

Excerpt from that OSU article:
"STILLWATER — Walk inside the Sherman E. Smith Training Center, the newest piece of Oklahoma State's immense facilities upgrade, and it's easy to feel engulfed by the massive 92,000-square-foot structure.

It's also easy to notice it feels a bit stuffy.

You see, the Cowboys' sparkling indoor practice facility has fabric doors that roll up to let air flow in. But the tour guide on this day has not yet gone through the proper training to open said doors.

That's one of the unique qualities of the $19-million Smith Center, a facility that will immediately become another recruiting asset for the Cowboys and a place the football team has already begun staging summer workouts to escape the rain and sun.

“Nobody has a facility like this,” OSU megabooster Boone Pickens boasted to the athletic department's Cowboy Roundup show during construction last year."

My argument to Rick would be - put some REAL effort into a staff and recruiting, and then get back to me. How bad can the weight room be? I thought it was just redone?

As Jason B says, it's the staff that matters and other than Klemm, we haven't had a STUD recruiter. We had some good recruits that were willing to play for him.

The weight room was redone and it is pretty much on par with those "awesome" UT, TCU and OU weight rooms.

The only thing we don't have is the fancy IPF and the luxurious spa amenities that those programs have...

Does June really know how to identify and hire a stud recruiter (he stumbled upon Klemm)? And the head coach must still recruit hard himself and not just sit back. Nobody else that June has hired has been a cl called stud recruiter. We need a head coach that can identify and hire a stud recruiter as well as coach IMHO.

Let's see... we've paid June $12 million. If he were willing to kick in half the cost ($3.5 million) as the principal donor, I'll bet the project would break ground by February. We'd even name it after him. Where is YOUR commitment June? Put your money where your mouth is.

Phillips is generally considered to be a really good recruiter.

that was his rep before coming here. I don't see that he has done a lot here. Yes, some recruits but not Klemm-like.
