IIRC we also used to get a lot of recruits from Hou. Kashmere.

How easy of a schedule does June want? We played six teams ranked over 100 this year and only won five. We don't have many options to schedule teams ranked much lower, without going all FCS
for the OOC teams. When we have a conference schedule similar to Alabama's or Ohio State, or Texas Tech, then we can worry about scheduling several easy OOC games. Gosselin's argument is laughable.

4 P5 caliber kids at Lamar this year and Phillips has only landed one, that's not exactly "having" a school.

a good post from FTHP! -- thanks for the links on the IPF's.

ok, going to head to head I could see how that might make a difference. SMU should have done this 5 years ago when June got here, I will agree on that and shame on the admins, I just don't think you can say it's one of the top reasons we don't get recruits.

The conference teams are the conference teams. If it's a strong year in the AAC, it will be a tough schedule. If it's a weak year, it won't be as tough. I would guess what JJ wants is a more realistic non-conference schedule. Make it TCU, a cupcake and a couple of games we should compete in -- not a guaranteed win and not a guaranteed loss. If we could have a legit shot at getting to conference with a 2-2 or maybe even a 3-1 record once in a while, that changes the conference and bowl seasons entirely.

Funny, the schedule wasn't an issue for June back when we were "One and a half classes away". Now that he's failed miserably in recruiting/development he wants the schedule to be weak to cover up those failures.

"Having" a school is a relative term when talking about SMU football recruiting! Yes I would've loved to land Bonney or Plattenburg (sp?), but they committed to UT and UCLA! You really think we should be getting those kids to attend SMU??

Zelt Minor, Shelby Walker would've never committed to SMU without JP. Walker has offers from Boise, Michigan St and Minor had offers from Tech, Utah, Washington St and others. I will take those dudes every day of the week.

We can poo-poo this staff all we want, and most of it is valid, but JP is the only guy earning his paycheck on the trail.

Has Phillips recruited any other Houston area high school besides Lamar? Or is Lamar the only high school in the Houston metro area

Problem is Minor and Walker are decent recruits but not pied-piper types that stand up and make big-time recruits take notice. Phillips may be doing better than his fellow assistants but that's nothing compared to the legit recruiters in college football.

I guess I look at this differently. My expectation (maybe I was expecting too much) was that by year 6 of JJ, we'd be competitive with the mid level teams of the big 12 and
actually have a shot at beating them. JJ should have/had his staff working their tails off to get better (specifically recruiting better players). I wish I had the option have saying "this job is too hard.
Can you make it easier for me because I just don't want to work that hard?" My point is we shouldn't be in this position. With that said, we are in this
position and I agree we don't need to be embarrassed three times before we get to the conference schedule.

ftwm- disagree only because an easy ooc would likely get jj to another insignificant bowl game and then we would never hear the end of it.

agree completely - that's why I said it is "relative"...relative to how badly the other coaches recruit, JP is a stud.

Let's keep in mind that June has never succeeded against top talent. So if we want to win with June Jones we need to play bad teams.

Best season 12-1...
N. Colorado
Louisiana Tech (OT)
UNLV
Charleston Southern
Idaho
Utah State
San Jose State (OT)
New Mexico State
Nevada
Fresno
Boise St
Washington
Georgia (L)

He beat Boise St. and Washington. Fresno is respectable...not bad. Going undefeated is great in any league.
And yes he got beat down by SEC Georgia...but even Fatterson would've gotten his arse handed to him in that Sugar Bowl
