I've poured money, time and energy into SMU athletics and have 3 degrees from the school to boot. So if you are telling people like me to "get lost" - good luck finding my replacement.Bergermeister wrote:Don't let the door hit you in the.................ponyinNC wrote: what i can do personally is find another team to root for - a team that actually values having a winning football program.
The wonderful education that I received at SMU allows me to recognize a poor investment when I see one. And SMU football is rapidly becoming the equivalent of a penny stock.
I am very proud of my SMU degrees - but I am not proud of our AD, our admin or our football program.

No I may be giving up in football cause JJ does not care for me or my school. He does not care what the SMU fans think and wants to be in Hawaii. PB at least acted like he wanted to be here. LB and Doherty acted like they want to be here. It is not too much to ask in exchange for $2+ mm.Mountain Mustang wrote:So you were willing to suffer through 20 years of crap, perennial rankings in the bottom 10, and only an aspiration to be mediocre, and now you're jumping ship? By that logic you'd prefer the past 20 years of being god awful over our worst season in half a decade being 5-7. Pretty logical.ponyinNC wrote:what i can do personally is find another team to root for - a team that actually values having a winning football program.RepublicanPNY wrote:This doesn't surprise me. i can express my displeasure by not taking a trip to Dallas for a game, which I usually do. i can just let it go and i will probably be a much happier person.
It's an indictment in Jones that fans who put up with 20 years of failure cannot take it anymore though we have had success with them.

I didn't sit through 20 years of crap. Only about 13 years of crap, from 1996 to 2008. Actually in 96 we were 5-6 and beat Arkansas and TCU! In 97 we had a winning record. So really only 11 years of crap.Mountain Mustang wrote:So you were willing to suffer through 20 years of crap, perennial rankings in the bottom 10, and only an aspiration to be mediocre, and now you're jumping ship? I never had "only an aspiration to be mediocre." I chose SMU over schools such as USC and Vandy - programs that I would be proud to support today. I chose SMU law over PAC 12 and ACC schools. Had I to do it over again, I probably would have loved to have gone to a school that has full support for its football program.
The "logical" choice at this point would actually be to cut losses and support a winner. The "illogical" choice would be doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. That is insanity. That is SMU football.

I am with you. I cannot wish ill on the program but I can justify the mental beat down and expense of supporting a program that doesn't support me. It us like an abusive relationship.ponyinNC wrote:I didn't sit through 20 years of crap. Only about 13 years of crap, from 1996 to 2008. Actually in 96 we were 5-6 and beat Arkansas and TCU! That said I still think June is gone. But if I am wrong I guess I will be a hoops fan only. Or maybe I will support Rice for football. They are doing a lot more with a lot less and need more fans.

I support the team, not the coach. I will continue to support the team, regardless of the coach.

So, JJ is coming back for another year. One more year. Whine, cry, shake your fists, don't go to games. That's your choice. It won't change anything.
It's unrealistic to expect the AD to take a $2 million hit. So let's deal with it. If we have a successful 2014 then we should be happy. If we don't, we should be happy because JJ will be gone. AND we have a BB program on the rise. All is not lost. SMU athletics are relevant.
My choice to go to SMU wasn't based on football. And the value of a degree from SMU doesn't depend on a win-loss record. The angst on this board suggests that some are insecure of a water-cooler d**k measuring contest with Aggies and Horns, etc. Presumably we're all made of better stuff than to let a team of 18-21 year olds define our worth.

That is admirable PonyTime.PonyTime wrote:I support the team, not the coach. I will continue to support the team, regardless of the coach.
My issue is that it is not simply a matter of "the coach" - it is the entire football program and the support levels (or lack thereof) from the admin/AD/et al. Of course I support the players; but if they are not really given a chance to compete and win at a high level, it just seems fruitless.
Not to compare the game of football to a war ( I know that is stupid thing to do) - but the analogy holds true: I support the troops even if I disagee with the reason(s) behind the war. In the same light, I support the players who sacrifice their time, bodies and so much more in pursuit of winning, even if I think he program is headed south. The issue isn't the team - it is the lack of direction and lack of plan for the program.

Couch - If you are correct about the "mutual parting" scenario, why say anything to the media about contract status at all. If a parting was pre-arranged wouldn't it be cleaner for both parties to quietly announce it later and have a "gratitude ceremony" to honor JJ for his contribution? If JJ leaves now, SMU looks like the loser in the deal. Why would the school agree to that?couch 'em wrote:This fits the "mutual parting" conclusion perfectly. June takes reduced or eliminated buyout to leave in exchange for the story to be he left on his own, not that he was fired. June wins, SMU wins. I think this was worked out long long ago.
I know, I know... I'm looking for rationality in an irrational world. Loving SMU football just makes it worse.

Then why, pray tell, are you posting on the SMU football board? If football is so inconsequential to your individual worth and the value of your degree, what makes you visit the site and post?birddogger wrote:My choice to go to SMU wasn't based on football. Honest question.
I see athletics as the "front porch" of any university. You may have an unbelievable home, but if the front porch is broken and dilapidated, the value of your property as a whole is diminished. Same holds true for athletic programs and the university they are attached to.

It's not "inconsequential" in the sense of being a fan and supporting the university. Otherwise, it really doesn't matter. I never turned up my nose at my brother's degree from Rice because the Owls were terrible. And I don't worry if an alum or wanna-be-alum from another college jokes about the SMU football team. What I have a hard time understanding is how that same alum falls to pieces when his team loses. Then why, pray tell, are you posting on the SMU football board? Maybe the post-DP era of failure caused me to view sports in a different light, or maybe I'm just too old. But I'll continue to post and express my opinions and criticisms of and support for the team, thanks.

Hey, no problem. We all want success. As you might have noticed, I am not happy with staff's lack of effort on the recruiting trail. Inexcusable for the amount of $$$ that they are paid. THAT rustles my jimmies more than anything.
