Yeah, Steinberg got online and asked negative questions about JJ in a chat just so Sherrington would give a positive answer.

Question: Do you agree with Rick? Should SMU extend June Jones?

Kevin Sherrington: I know there's not a lot of enthusiasm for a coach who goes to bowls and doesn't win 10 games, and who also has flirted with two other schools. You have to ask if you can do better. Can SMU? It's a very similar situation to Rice, which has David Bailiff. He's had his ups and downs, but he's won 10 games twice, including this year. A young coach is going to use SMU as a steppingstone. You're probably more inclined to go with a coach who's been around a little. Bottom line: I think I keep June.

Question: If SMU decides to fire June, who can they get to replace him?

Kevin Sherrington: They're not going to fire him. He's got an extension ready to go. What SMU has to ask itself is what are we doing that keeps us from competing with like-minded schools? Getting fans to games is undoubtedly No. 1. That was a pitiful sight for all those empty seats in the closer.

Question: Will SMU ever be able to compete with the big boys?

Kevin Sherrington: Lots of SMU questions right out of the box. Yes, SMU could compete occasionally, but it's going to take some concessions on the part of the university, and I'm not sure there's a climate to entertain that notion.

Seems like he is saying SMU cannot do better than June. Which I think is total BS.

Pitiful attendance when the entire city is shut down because of icy treacherous conditions and tons without power (me included)? What do you expect?

What concessions? Are we back to the idiot athlete course load and keeping kids in school without failing? I am so tired of this. Other, more elite private schools are competing that have more stringent standards.

The "elite private schools" that come to mind are Duke, Vanderbilt, Stanford, Notre Dame, University of Miami....every one of them is in a P5 conference. Makes their road tones easier. Not disagreeing with what you are getting at. Can you think of an elite private school out there that is competing that is not in a P5 conference? There are probably some, just can't think of them off the top of my head.

We really need to work on attendance...that we can all agree on. 300 people in that game? We have 7k undergrads and probably around 4k kids on and near campus.

I thought ND was an independent for fball. Not true?? Also, down the road is a little school called RICE. Although they haven't set the world on fire in the past they did win a championship this year and kicked our tales last year. Also, I suspect their academics are a little better than ours.

ND is an independent for football. They have a scheduling agreement with the ACC where they play a certain amount of games in that conference every year (I think 5 games). All other teams moved from the BE/AAC to the ACC.

TCU made the jump
BYU technically although they are really in a different category

Tulane.

Also the service academies. Yes, I know they're sort of in a different category, but they are elite academic institutions.

yes, the academies are different but Navy always seems to kick our butt, has at least as high academics and has coaches that recruit.

SMU is like Jaye Davidson in The Crying Game. Everything looks good until "she" drops trou.

We have virtually no slice of the DFW entertainment $, competing in a pro-sports town and in a town where "Big Time" college football is available in any number of driveable directions. Our students care in small numbers. The school has been historically unfriendly to athletes and while this has been changed (or so we hear) I can see the perception out there still being negative. We have not engaged the city, indeed much of the city is unaware that SMU is a D1 school. We have an athletic department that has to rely on the generosity of private individuals. And then there is the only online source for information about SMU athletics is Ponyfans, where any casual reader/prospective player/coach/parent, is going to think that the fanbase is totally delusional.

Hey SMU fans! don't send questions to these clowns.
They know nothing, and all you get is clueless answers that make us look bad to the uninformed.

the only time i ever saw non-smu students/alumni at smu games was in the 80s.
we were in the swc and kicking behind.
until we are in a bcs conference and are very good/great we have no chance.
it is a truce catch 22.
as ron meyer said, smu is a tough nut to crack.

Recently on the "around the Hilltop" board there was a video clip from the 1950 home coming. Most of it was on campus filming, but towards the end they showed the home coming parade and a bit of the game against A&M. The home coming parade was through downtown Dallas with the street( Main Street I think) lined with people there to watch the parade and the Cotton Bowl (the house that Doak built) was packed full. There was a time when SMU WAS Dallas' team.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
