Says he'll get a $50k bonus for keeping attendance above 95%. Also gets a bonus based on team GPA. Holding a head coach accountable?
Re: Kingsbury bonusesI always assumed that there were all kind of incentives in contracts of this nature (wins, etc) -- attendance is an interesting one as there are a lot of things that impact that outside of the HC (although WINS and ENGAGEMENT really help).
Kingsbury bonusesBut I think it goes to our situation when blame gets deflected everywhere but the chief.
Re: Kingsbury bonusesYou can't blame the chief, whoever that is. A successful program takes all factions pulling together in the same direction with a goal and how that goal will be attained. Just having a head coach who calls plays and wins is not enough. Start with the little things and work your way up. Administration, students, board members, surrounding community, extended communities, alumni....that way everyone can take ownership good or bad. SMU is just a blame it on the head coach and ad university now. Too many are saying win and make everything perfect and then we will support the program. It doesn't work like that.
Re: Kingsbury bonusesThat's why CEOs never ever get fired.

Re: Kingsbury bonuses
The point here is that the head coach is incentivized(?) to draw fans. The parties of that contract both agreed that the head coach plays a large role in drawing and sustaining fan support. Who best to communicate with "Administration, students, board members, surrounding community, extended communities, alumni?" I'd rather hear it from the coach than an associate AD or a commercial with a chemistry lab.

Now wait, you can't list a criminal right after a good guy!
Re: Kingsbury bonuses
I like that idea, but I can't imagine a coach not laughing when discussing an attendance bonus at SMU. Mustangs Abu!
Re: Kingsbury bonuses
That is the easiest thing in the world to sell at SMU. Our current season average is roughly 50% to 60% of capacity. If you are negotiating the contact, I want an additional $10k for each 5% increase over 50%. We are at a point after the "dark" years that our attendance probably cannot get much worse. There isn't much of a downside for the coach and the school would agree to it because the bonus could be paid out of the increased revenue. Imagine being at Alabama having this same deal when playing UT-Chattanooga, Colorado State or Georgia St. Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall
Re: Kingsbury bonusesOk, I guess I had not fully considered it. I would still maintain that a coach is unlikely to accept such a "bonus" as a serious component of his wage structure at SMU.

Re: Kingsbury bonuses
I like how Kingsbury's contract's incentives are pointed towards what the school sees as a priority: attendance, gpa and winning/showing up at bowl games. Let's put this on June's contract.
Re: Kingsbury bonusesThere should absolutely be incentives above base. Wins, bowls, type of bowls, attendance (% increases could be good). Should include all your relevant KPIs. Exec compensation 101.
Re: Kingsbury bonusesthere should also be a recruiting requirement bonus. +5k for each recruit that has 4* or min. of 4BCS offers and a deduct of 5k for each recruit with 2* or less than 2 BCS offers.
I also think the attendance 'bonus' should be based on total season attendance, not just a specific game. Of course if we drop a lot of our major games (A&M,BU, TCU etc.) then it might not make any difference.
Re: Kingsbury bonusesPut an attendance incentive in a coach's contract at SMU and see how many apply.
