Mumme ConnectionUnder my "this had been planned over a year" theory Hal Mumme is interesting. I doubt he came here just to run the offense for one year. It's he the next coach? I think we would aim higher.
Who of the possible candidates had a Mumme connection? Perhaps he is the prearranged OC food a coach we agreed to a year ago. Bonus I'd they have a connection to Mason although I don't think he is key. "I think Couchem is right."

Re: Mumme ConnectionHe and Mason coached against each other in the WAC, missed coaching together by 2 years under same coach at Fresno so similar circles.

Re: Mumme ConnectionCouch, I love a good conspiracy theory - so I'll play along.
Mumme, with Hart's blessing, was brought in to be the heir apparent. JJ is going to announce a medical condition will keep him out of coaching for a while and Mumme is going to be the interim HC. He plans on being back in plenty of time for Spring practices. He will go back to the islands to "recover" his strength. Sometime after signing day, JJ will return to Dallas and say that the ship is in great hands with Mumme and he just doesn't have the strength to go on. He is going to retire and return to the islands. Meanwhile Hart will announce that they have come to terms on a three year deal with Mumme to be our new head coach. Fait accompli... Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall
Re: Mumme ConnectionQuite possible. I think it is strong possibility that Mumme is some combination of future OC, future head coach (ugh) or a strong tryout for either.

Re: Mumme ConnectionIMO there are too many young coaches that deserve a chance. They would recruit, build relationships with HS coaches etc. We really don't need a retread (poss.. exception M. Brown).
Re: Mumme ConnectionWhat better message to send to the world that SMU is serious about football than hiring a guy who was last the head coach at McMurray, a D2 school, and before that couldn't do a thing at New Mexico State. Yep.
Back off Warchild seriously.
Re: Mumme ConnectionWhen I heard Mumme was leaving a head coaching job at McMurray to come to SMU, I figured that he did so with the promise of the Mustang head coaching job as part of the deal.
Re: Mumme ConnectionI've said all along Mumme could well have been in the picture for a while. I don't hate the idea. But we will see.
Mustangs Abu!
Re: Mumme ConnectionAnd that would show rgt and casper's true colors. fcs bound.
Re: Mumme Connection
Hal isn't the worst option and he may actually work out as a head coach. I don't take his New Mexico State record as indicative of his ability. Few have ever done anything there, the notable exception being Warren Woodson.
Re: Mumme Connection
If JJ was really offered an extension in June, then his coming makes more sense. The thinking is the he is going to be the OC at an FBS school for at least three years (the Run 'n' Raid did put up some impressive stats this season). This could help lead to another FBS head coaching job. He wasn't going to get a shot like that at McMurray State and I'm sure his salary was at least a wash between the two jobs. Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall
Re: Mumme ConnectionI thought Mumme resigned to be OC someplace on the east coast then changed his mind to come to SMU, so he did not quit Mcmurry to come to SMU.

Re: Mumme ConnectionWe are a last-stop-before-retirement school. That's all this is.
