I'm sorry but that is delusional. Assuming SMU basketball becomes as competitive as he hope and believe it will be done on the back of having an HOF coach with recent NBA experience, a coaching tree dominating the national scene and being in the BBall equivalent of a BCS conference.

In football none of those things exist. Put in a young stud recruiter they still don't exist. And we don't have the promise of sold out arena in football either.

I don't think JJ is the be-all-end-all, and his attitude to recruiting bothers me greatly, but he has many strengths as a coach that we would be foolish to discount.

Larry Brown would not have gotten the players he has gotten if he had not hired a staff in which everyone on it can both recruit and coach. Larry Brown's staff truly does not get the credit they deserve. As Hoopmanx has said that Larry Brown listened to and hired the guys that the industry said would be the best not his buddies.

We would do well if we had mid level recruits. Nobody is asking for high level but at mid level would be good. Mid level recruits would have offers from your bottom feeder BCS schools like Iowa St etc.

But when 1/4 of the class has no offers except SMU it is concerning.

USF is having a bad year and low attendance but they have a staff the is rolling [deleted] the recruiting trail and getting the best class in the AAC.

ITS THE STAFF!!!!!!!!!!!!
Larry Brown was out of the game for decades. Larry is the closer. The staff has earned an A+ and deserves to be highly compensated. This is clear to SMU fans following recruiting.
There is a misconception that Larry Brown just picks 3 recruits, gets them signed and apparently just vacations in the Bahamas. And that it is much easier than Football recruiting. NO. its NOT. First, June has 9 assistants. Larry has 3. Second, Brown and staff blankets the entire National Top 100 and we know they are developed strong relationships with 20-25 players in each Class. Most of these national recruits have 8-10 times the offers the Football recruits. They aren't easier to recruit in any way. Even when SMU loses a BB recruit we almost always go down swinging and our staff is always lauded for its effort. The exact opposite characterizes the Football program

Haha, yeah, he may have a problem proving the reliability of his methods.... although for only $9 a month, he can be an "expert witness" on recruiting just like the rest of us. :D

At no point did I say I don't know a thing about recruiting. I read PonyFans every day but don't post very often. I wasn't aware that I need to pay $8.95 per month to have my opinion deemed credible. I graduated in 2007 and I have not missed a home game since 2008, so I've seen enough SMU football to hold my own here.

I was only trying to make the point that there are major barriers to improving our recruiting, and no guarantees that the next coaching staff will be substantially better.

I would go even further than Stallion and argue that it is actually much HARDER for LB to sign the types of recruits that SMU is getting.

1.) SMU Basketball has absolutely ZERO history (all apologies to Krebs and Koncak and Ira). I am sorry, but for current recruits, SMU might as well be Singapore Management University. In football, the 30 for 30 opened a lot of younger folks' eyes on our proud football heritage/history. We claim National Championships, we've gone to 4 bowl games recently, we have players in the NFL HOF, etc. We are also in a football state, and have a huge recruiting advantage by being located smack dab in the hottest recruiting bed in the country (agruably). Does the FB staff take advantage of our location? No.

2.) We aren't signing kids off the street with ZERO offers in basketball, as we are for football. We are currently recruiting against the likes of Duke, Kentucky, UNC, Kansas, Baylor, UCLA, et al - and we are winning some of these battles! When we don't win, we are still right there on the edge. And we have backups ready to go. This would be like the football staff getting recruits with offers from Bama, FSU, Bama, LSU, Oregon, TAMU, et al. As you know, that simply doesn't happen.

3.) LB has the same negative recruiting going on about SMU BB as Jones does with SMU FB - lack of fan support, lack of athlete-friendly majors, mostly affluent/white students, blah blah blah. However, it hasn't stopped Maligi and Turner (and Howard before that) from signing the TOP KIDS IN THE COUNTRY! E-Man is the equivalent of us landing Da'Shawn Hand in football this year(or Green-beckam in 2012, Nkemdiche last year). He is the #1 player on the board, and we got him. Just sit back and think about that fact for a moment, and then tell me why we cannot do the same in football!

Poor USF not in a BCS conference and poor attendance but still has over half it's recruiting class with BCS offers (some even high level BCS offers)

And they just got a commit from the kid who is not injured and has offers from Baylor, Texas Tech, Arizona State etc.

PNC- great points. We don't do those things in fball because we don't have anybody that recruits or wants to recruit on a top level basis.

Thanks. That wasn't directed at you as much as it was at Stallion.

I am with you 100% on your three points on basketball as I believe our future is much brighter there. We have a much better chance of becoming nationally relevant in basketball than in football. Plus, with the size of our school and state of our fan base, it will be much easier to fill 7,500 (is that right?) seats in Moody vs. 32K in Ford. I just hope LB wants to stay a few more years and that we can keep Maligi and Turner on the staff.
