Stop scheduling Big 12

Post by feelthehorsepower »

I think the best way to repay the Big 12 for not inviting us is to stop scheduling Big 12 teams. We could still schedule TCU which is a Big 12 stepchild though.
But no Baylor, Texas Tech etc.

Unless we are in that conference, we shouldn't play them. Let's build up the team using other means.

Sometimes the things you say are so dumb it makes my brain hurt....

Repay the Big XII for not inviting us by not playing them? Are you 9 years old? That's a completely serious question

Better idea would be to start scheduling teams from a conference that we would like to join. For example Pac 12 or ACC teams should be scheduled instead, in my opinion. ACC would be the perfect conference for us since we could be competitive in Football and Basketball and we could bring Atlantic teams to play in Dallas, a big differentiator from just bringing in Big 12 schools.

What is your vision for our football? Serious question.

Every time you always talk about how "realistically" we are stuck in the AAC...please tell me what your vision for SMU football is.

How about instead of wanting to be a whiny little [deleted] and stop playing Big XII teams, we man up and beat them instead? In that the best way to "repay" someone? Should we play all of TCU, Baylor, A&M, and Teach each year? Right now, no, we're not even anywhere near them. Probably TCU every year and one of Baylor or Tech each year.

To matter, you have to beat teams that matter. I don't buy the whole schedule everyone who's a patsy argument. You guys know that UCF gained ground in the polls after they LOST to South Carolina right? It's because they played a good team and almost beat them. Yes, almost doesn't matter, but do you remember how many people were talking about UNT after they went into Athens and gave Georgia a run for their money?

Right now we mean nothing to anyone, so until we get a coach that gives a [deleted] and have a team that can win and recruit against our peers (the AAC), we won't matter.

You make a very good point... :)

But could we say that we are in the same page in that we want the program to EARN a spot in the P5?

We do need a coach that does give a [deleted] about SMU. The Godfather is making things happen in basketball, unlike June in Football.

(GASP !) I actually agree with FTHP. No, not for the reason he gave...

I think for OOC games we should start scheduling games where SMU has pockets of Alumni. It is a giant plus if they are also easy to get to from Dallas. I think the game at Michigan is great. When I was at SMU we had a lot of students from Michigan. We used to play UCLA. We have a lot of Cali alumni. I wouldn't be against scheduling Rutgers after they leave the conference. How about one of the North Carolina teams for the alumni that live in the southeast. I'm not saying we should do this for all four OOC games, but maybe one or two per year. I think this is an opportunity to get more Alumni involved in SMU Football.

Without knowing the breakdown of students from Rice, I would be willing to wager that SMU has the most national focus of all the Texas schools. Our football schedule is so Texas centric, that it excludes most alumni that don't have the time or resources to travel.

Texas-centric is a good thing, you have to cater to your base not scattered pockets of alums.

Well duh, I would like to be a part of the P5. Who on earth in their right mind wouldn't?

Do I think it will happen anytime in ______
The next 5 years? Absolutely Not
The next 10 years? Not in the way that the P5 stands today. Maybe a watered down ACC*
The next 20 YEARS? Not even going to bother trying to gather what college football will be like then. It might be played with flags at that point which would probably help out June's 2034 Razzle n' Dazzle offense.

*Watered down ACC would be something like Cincy, UConn, USF, BC, Pitt, Syracuse, NC State, Duke, Houston, SMU, UCF, Wake Forest, Louisville, and Memphis

The players want it, the fans want it. forget about eaking out a 6 and 6 record and going to a bowl. If you ask most true fans and the players and ask if they would rather play the Horns in Austin in front of 100,000 or the BBVA Compass Bowl on Jan 4th in front of 20,000, they would pick the Horns. Recruits want to play on tv, in front of crowded stadiums, against big-name teams. Now the coaches need to recruit good and we will win some of those games. The field is the same size at all Division one programs so the difference is the players and coaches on that field, not the 5000 to 100,000 in the stands.

Not scheduling Big 12 teams anymore might be the dumbest thing we could possibly do with the program, outside of giving June a lifetime contract.

Good thinking. Let's start with Waco, Ft Worth, and Austin.
