I don't think he is the lone decenter but it sounds it is more of an old guard vs new new guard thing. More older guards so they have more votes so to speak.

What is the mindset of these people like (possibly) Ford? They can't be that clueless. Are they afraid that if we win they can't keep control of the program for themselves?

I don't think they're clueless. I think they'd rather have a known known (in JJ winning the easy games plus his bowl games) than a known unknown in a new coach. Whiff on a new coach and go back to 2-10 seasons and you've lost 5 years. Those 5 years have to be a lot more precious when you're 70 than when you're 40. Too precious to take a risk.

Plus they may be making the assumption SMU's baseline really is 2-10 and that's the best we SHOULD be doing since we're poor little SMU. If you believe that, 7-5 is an incredible coaching job. bs. Guys like MS want excellence and are willing to roll the dice.
