Re: Reality Check
Say, Pug. How much did Texas Tech dominate the SWC?
Should they step back, reassess their goals?

Pug - Aren't you the guy that started a thread full of BS and got smacked back down by every single poster after that? Ah yes, I thought that was you.

Whatever. Y'all just keep patting each other on the back and thinking everything is going to be fine after June gets canned. That's the ticket.
P.S. You don't humiliate me with your comments. I've been an SMU football fan for 46 years; I've acquired immunity to humiliation.

I've never said everyting will automatically be fine after JJ gets canned - actually, it will probably be very bad for a while with the poo-poo recruiting over the past few years.
But IMHO it is time for a change. The shelf life for most coaches is 3-5 years, and even the good ones usually wear out their welcome by years 8 or 9, even when they've won championships. Look at UT - Mack Brown took them to the top, but he was still forced to resign this year, because of the downward trajectory of the program. Andy Reid in the NFL comes to mind - and in that situation, everybody won. Eagles got Chip Kelly, and Reid is winning big-time with the Chiefs.
It is only my opinion, which everyone is entitled to have themselves.

If Texas Tech were a relatively small, private school, were not in a P5 conference, had suffered the DP, had an apparently tiny fanbase, had to compete for attention with professional sports and other random entertainment, and had wandered in the collegiate-football desert for over twenty years, I would say, yes, it should probably reassess its goals, regardless of its W-L record in the old SWC.
Apples and oranges.

We were from the start of the progam until the day Doak Walker hung up his cleats. And we were for a relatively brief period in the '80's.
Doesn't mean we shouldn't continually aim to be a football power going forward. I'm hoping that Larry Brown and the new Moody are the start of exactly that on the basketball side to where we can point back to the day he was hired as the day we became the next Duke.

This argument about not being a P5 school, not having resources etc.etc. is so old and stale. What would you think if your attorney told you that he lost your case because the other attorneys firm was a lot bigger and had more resources? What if you had to tell your business clients that you are sorry that your product is not as good as the competition because they are a lot bigger and have more design engineers? What a crock. You suck it up and compete or go home. If you know you can't run with the big dogs don't get off of the effin porch.

If my math is correct, 26.67% of SMU's bowl appearances have been under June Jones! Now, remind me again about what a big, bad football power SMU has been, historically speaking. I just don't see it.
My point is that some people's present-day expectations for SMU football seem delusional to me, given our historical record in football. As further evidence, check out our all-time records against our former SWC foes. Where are all these alleged "glory days"? Occasionally, we had a great team, and now and then, we pulled a big upset (or came close). SMU has never been a traditional, consistent football power.

And if this season is any indication suck is back though suck versus relevant competition never really left.
