And UTSA and take the Amtrak to SA. Do you older guys remember a trip out to Texas Tech on the train from Dallas in the 60s, what a hot time that was! Wow, those Thetas. Ah, well. The good ole days when we had fans.

I think for OOC games we should start scheduling games where SMU has pockets of Alumni. It is a giant plus if they are also easy to get to from Dallas.
Good thinking. Let's start with Waco, Ft Worth, and Austin.
+1

Southland Conference here we come. I'm sure TX State, UTSA and Rice will be more than pleased to take our place on Big XII schedules...and all will probably be more competitive than we have been

without Big 12 Games we wouldn't average more than 10,000 real SMU fans in the stands and season ticket sales would plummet. Those games are just about the only reason to buy season tickets. Otherwise, you can sit on the 50 every week

Re: Stop scheduling Big 12
I think 1 game a year out of conference against superior competition is enough for now. Its where the program is. This past season was a testament to that. Its going to take new leadership to vault the program ahead to the next level. Playing programs we have no business playing is fruitless.

But no Baylor, Texas Tech etc.
Unless we are in that conference, we shouldn't play them. Let's build up the team using other means.
We never filled the stadium during the Pony Express days unless we played a relevant Texas opponent. You really want a Wazzu sized crowd for all of our home OOC games?
Insane. Would you please stop posting so many threads? You have no idea what you're talking about.

No one fills their stadium unless they have relevant competition. Trade in Texas Tech's position with ours...put them in CUSA and lets see if they can draw 50k to their games 10 years down the road...
Scheduling Big 12 and getting blown out does more harm than good. I prefer we play easier opponents while we build up our team and when we are ready we beat them. Also, I never said don't schedule P5...schedule teams from the ACC, Big Ten, PAC 12. Our best way to build up is to leave Texas behind while we get ready. Just play the Frogs for now and that's it!

Tech is already P5 so it doesn't matter what they'd do in our position. You want us to stop getting blown out in Big 12 games then we need to start recruiting better and beating those teams. Running from them to play irrelevant teams from other P5 conference will reduce interest in this program (not that we'd win much of those games with our current talent level anyway). Bailing on Texas only makes sense if you want SMU to be a FCS program. Is that what you want?

your rational for your conclusion is garbage but your conclusion is valid.
what's the first thing mack brown did at Texas? no tough non-con came for almost 7 years so that he could go 2-0 or 3-0 to start every season...imagine if we were half way to a bowl before the TCU game or conference play started?
would be nice.

Would be nice if we didn't have a serious attendance issues and weren't stuck in the G5 but we are and playing bums to get fake wins (not even guaranteed we'd beat them with our current level of talent) isn't going to help us fix either problem.

Re: Stop scheduling Big 12

So 3 automatic losses a year, under the current regime.
Re: Stop scheduling Big 12
with the recruiting classes we have coming in, I don't think we need to worry about being able to beat a big 12 team. what about worrying about if we can beat a sun belt/new cusa team?
Re: Stop scheduling Big 12
I've thought about it and I think I'm actually coming around to this a version of this idea, so long as we all understand it's temporary.
Hire a young, hungry coach who will hit the ground running on recruiting, and commit to five years of this schedule: TCU, UNT, Sun Belt, FCS, then our AAC cupcake walk. After five years, slowly start ramping up the schedule again. It'll be a boring five years of "What city are they in, again?" opponents and an empty stadium, but we can keep bowling while the next coach restocks June's empty pantry.
