he is being allowed to play out his 1 year contract-I bet all he gets for Years 2-3 is a buyout of a gift certificate to Tommy Bahama, a pair of winter socks and a 'Peruna is My Mascot T-Shirt. Calm down about the 3 year extension. I'm sure its illusory. Its simply a way to make it appear he is not a Lame Duck during recruiting season

The Circle of Champions invested in SMU in the hopes of stimulating SMU fans and jump starting SMU's BCS hopes. Who failed worse? The Circle of Champions or SMU's entitled fanbase? By any logical financial analysis of this program the enormous financial investment in SMU Football over the last 15 years (among the highest of all non-BCS schools) makes very little sense unless revenues are substantially increased through significantly higher ticket revenue. This ball game is just about over if we don't increase the fanbase whether we win or lose. All you are doing is making a chronic 50 year problem worse and reinforcing the undesireability of the SMU job to prospective coaches

Stallion, you have an above .500 batting avg. Knowing what I know, I don't trust SMU to make the right decision.

June is probably laughing at SMU

JJ didn't say that he had leverage on SMU... The ESPN blowhard announcer said it.

So where did the ESPN blowhards get that info? (Can you say Lee Steinberg?)

mrydel wrote:I have no reason to change. We all knew the extension was there. I will continue to support my school and enjoy basketball while continuing to wait for the next level in football. I will leave the heavy lifting to those that are there and know what is in the contract and what the real options are. I know many wanted Saban or Malzahn but the timing just was not right.

Agree Mrydel.

We don't know what is in contract. Hopefully, it was done right, so if things do not go well next year, that a change can be made without too much financial sacrifice from the C of C. These are smart guys, and I have to believe they will follow through with changes if that time comes to pass. I don't believe a bowl game next season will be a determiner of anything, but that progress will need to be shown.
In the mean time, I know June is a good coach, and I'm hoping he can pull a rabbit out of his hat and turn this thing around.

I guess I am not quite as beaten down as some here are. I took a long break from SMU football after marriage in 1999 through my divorce in mid 2007. I got back into football after divorce and have enjoyed the bonding with my son and nephew and teaching them about SMU history.

I hope that most of you that are upset will come back soon. If you have endured as an SMU fan, you automatically have earned the right to jump on and off the bandwagon anytime you wish.

I agree Stallion. I believe that basically what was just signed, was another 4 years with little very small buyout option, it's basically a series of one year contracts. Of course, SMU and C of C will not divulge that info, or that would undermine the illusion that we do not have a lame duck coach. I believe it will be up to Jones to prove himself worthy every year. If he does, he collects 2 million for the next year...

At least I hope that's how it is structured.

You need to worry abut the fact that I still have one year of eligibility remaining.

I hope all the big $$ clowns that plan to throw more good money after bad enjoy next season when the team is 3-9 or 2-10 or 1-11. That is where we will be and the year after will be even worse. Enjoy mediocrity with RGT (RulingGrandTurd) and his lackeys. BTW- if you listen carefully you will hear the whispers of FCS calling to you.

We are ultimately consumers;
SMU consistently puts a bad product in front of us;
Must we always consume it?

I think I'm going to try to double-down on RBA-stuff and try to make it so sitting and cheer in the stands is fun, no matter what's going down in the field.

I'm not worried...we don't go after 5 star recruits. :wink:
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

There's a pretty decent chance nothing has changed and we in effect have the same deal that we've known about for months now. Would bad things happen if we somehow increased our commitment to this program rather than bailing when we're most needed as fans?

bad things have already happened. They let him return and then had the stupidity of giving him an extension. IMO they should have just let his current agmt expire. I don't believe it would have hurt our recruiting because a) he doesn't recruit and b) the new coach would probably want better recruits anyway. Also, it would show the rest of the fball world that jj was an insulting a-hole and we no longer wanted him here.

Anyway it doesn't matter to me any longer. I am going to start the new year off right and forget that we even have/had a fball team and will no longer post on this forum. Might return in a few years, then again, might not.
Best wishes to all for a happy holiday.

When can we anticipate your resignation from Ponyfans to take effect?
