36-41 says it all
Was reading about June's contract extension on espn. In this highly competitive landscape of college football, how many schools would extend the contract of a coach with a 36-41 record? Maybe Navy or one of the service academy's? The only time you would see a school extend a coach with a losing overall record after 5 years would be if he was coming off marque year like Cutcliffe at Duke. Over all record under .500 and a 5-7 record gets an extension. Only at SMU!
Re: 36-41 says it all
take away 0-11
36-30, 4 bowls in 4 years out of 6, and 3 bowl victories.
vs. NADA for 25 years
yeah, that sucks (and I would have preferred a change, but let's not act like he sucks balls).

Next year there is a chance we can beat TCU and UNT in the OOC, and maybe keep Aggy close if Johnny Aggy leaves for the NFL. Baylor will depend on who's left from their Defense...

Everyone wants to take away that first year, but he was the coach and he inherited some significant talent, at least offensively. Those losses are 100% his.

I've seen Burcham. We lose most of our best talent, not a lot to replace them. Tougher OOC next year, no FCS team. 4-8 at best.
Re: 36-41 says it all
Cool so we can just eliminate our last 2 losing seasons when we look back at the last 10 seasons???

Burcham is still young...he improved dramatically from the Houston to the UCF game. Also, the offense wasn't necessarily giving him a hand at all...
I think we can do better next year with our More experienced Oline and Dline

So he inherits an 1-11 2007 team (some significant talent according to you), becomes the coach after January 6th, signing day is a month away, and goes 1-11 in 2008.
Right...
Just FYI (a little non-biased metric):
2006 class = #110 http://rivals.yahoo.com/smu/football/re ... 06/all/all
2007 class = #99 http://rivals.yahoo.com/smu/football/re ... 07/all/all
I think a fairer pov would be that he inherited a "team" in disarray and it took a year to weed out the non-performers/non-committed/install his system/encourage the team/change the attitude.
Did June put a lot of Bennett players into the NFL? Yes. Would they be there without June? Probably not. Most would have quit, transferred, or just wouldn't have been developed properly.
Interesting to note, that Bennett's last year had 3 walk-ons as starters. Great talent evaluator (see letting Josh McCown leave, see Matt Forte not good enough for SMU)
June's sin is lack of recruiting (and some questionable play-calling during the game). All here would agree that he runs his practices professionally and efficiently, and gets the most out of his talent.
Better ingredients, better pizza, but he cooks what he has very well.

It won't matter who Baylor loses, that game will be over before halftime. We are 1-3 probably 0-4 right now, just waiting on the final scores.

Re: 36-41 says it all
Its not the record-Ron Meyer was something like 24-31 after 5 years-its the trajectory of the program after 6 years. With an infusion of talent SMU went 10-1 in Ron Meyer's 6th year. With a lazy, close to incompetent recruiting (as opposed to evaluation) staff, June Jones went 5-7

Exactly. Four straight bowls should have created some momentum, but this staff did nothing to take advantage of it and it is getting worse, rather than better. The only thing keeping this from being dismal is we get to play some really bad teams. Some of those really bad teams are getting better and we are not.

Not to mention 35 bowl games now, as long as you don't have a losing season, you get rewarded.
Re: 36-41 says it all
Ron Meyer took over the program 35 years ago, you can't compare him or what we expected of coaches back then to today. The game has changed. 35 years ago a coach in a major conference could coach for 15 years or longer with a .500 record. And as I said, it's the combination of the record and the trajectory of the program. 36-41 coming off a 5-7 season and a horrible recruiting class. As you correctly said, Ron Meyer had a average overall record, but his last two seasons were 8-4 and 10-1 with top recruiting classes and wins over Texas and other big boys. That program was on a huge uphill swing when he left to say the least.
