Miami ModelThat Miami model thing is looking pretty weak. Not working out for us. I thought it was a lock. SMU is basically Miami in Dallas. There is no real difference. Same schools. Private schools in big cities. Should have worked. Didn't. Oh well time to move on and come up with another model. I suggest we change our model.
/\ Except that SMU is not teeming with felons and is actually a good institution. I think that's a horrible comparison.

Re: miami
Turned in? Hahahahaha. Texas wasn't innocent during that period, but SMU got caught red-handed. There's no two ways about it. ![]() Official Cult of Chris Phillips Member
/\ Probably. Along with just about any other school. It's a joke what isn't a violation these days.

I think what's being lost in this thread is the reference to the parable Coach Bennett told when he was hired. He spoke of a private school in a large major-league market, where theirs wasn't the only game in town, and where two large state schools with huge followings were the competition for recruits in the state. Of course, he later revealed that he was talking about Miami, or as Coach Switzer would say, Maw-amuh. I guess the parallels to Miami began and ended at that press conference. Wonder if Phil somewhere along the figured that wouldn't happen? Maybe we should shoot for Stanford.
I know we've discussed this ad nauseum...our model that sucks, everyone elses that works, which one we should & which one we shouldn't. I guess my thinking is probably over-simplified and backwards, but it just seems like if the Baptists all want to go to Baylor, and the Catholics all want Notre Dame, and the largest and most conistently successful private school BYU can do it with Mormons, SMU somewhere along the way dropped the ball by diluting its alliance with the Methodist Church. There are as many, if not more, Methodists than there are Mormons. Before anyone says it wouldn't work...I knew I was an SMU fan at 7 years old as a young methodist because that word was in the school name...oh yeah, that combined with Texas Stadium and the Pony Express.
isn't the reason the "Miami Model" hasn't worked at SMU because SMU has not actually used "Miami Model"?
isn't Miami admitting players that could not come close to being admitted to SMU? i think Miami football players have a less than 50% graduation rate.....isnt SMU usually above 70%? plus I bet Miami offers "Basket-Weaving 101" where at SMU the athletes must take real classes. C-ya @ Milos!
Even though we are not a Stanford, we tried the Stanford model post DP...look at the results.
The Miami goal is a very rational one IMO. We have all the assets to be the very best non-BCS school in the nation...all but one…commitment.
I love the unfounded facts of Miami being slung around...
While we bash Miami academically keep in mind that US News just ranked them twenty points higher than SMU. Also when we talk about their graduation rate...consider that more often than not their early departures are to the NFL which still counts against their graduation percentage. Lets stop trying to make ourselves feel better because of this reason or that... Read the book "Its a Cane Thing" and you discover the secret for Miami. They went out, got local support and did not lose any recruit in Southern Florida to another school. They stopped recruiting outside of florida and for the most part northern and central florida and got the talent within. Once it was established that those kids were Miami's property, then they could afford to look outside that bubble. SMU needs to establish that if you play football in the metroplex and the surrounding areas, then you are SMU's property. Have the coachs holding the doors for their mommas if you have too...but get in their faces early and often and don't give up until they sign that paper.
/\ Yeah, but in today's BCS world, SMU simply can't do that... Like the quoe from the statesman:
"The death penalty is something you can overcome in a couple years," James said, "but you can't overcome being left out of the Big 12." Who's going to come to SMU, when they need to go to Oklahoma, Texas, A&M, to compete for the big prize. It sucks to be relegated to this netherworld of college football life. Heck, I-AA has a national championship... Seriously, if SMU went undefeated this year, and say USC and Auburn only had one loss (with everyone else with at least two)... would SMU play for the BCS trophy? I really don't think so. ------- That being said... any Dallas area recruit - we ant you hear. Stay close to home, play in front of your home fans. Win the conference... Look at UTEP. A laughing stock till Mike Price.... They are on National TV 8 times this year. God bless CUSA. CUSA is going to help. Winning will help. The people of Dallas will turn up. We just need a winner. -ThadFilms ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
