Sad Day For The Mustangs

Postby 50's PONY » Sat Dec 28, 2013 7:10 pm

Word has been received that Art Barnes passed away yesterday and is now with the Lord. Art came to SMU in the early 1950's from Highland Park to play for Doc Hayes. Art was very quick and had a beautiful jump shot and fit right in the Mustang offense. He was captain his senior year and led the Mustangs to their very first NCAA appearance. Other members of the 1954-55 team were Jim Krebs, Bobby Mills, Larry Showalter, Ronnie Morris, Joel Krog, Tom Miller, Bob McGregor, Carl Scharffenberger, Oscar Furlong, Bob Clayton, Pepper Lee, and Nelson Alexander. The Mustangs won the SWC Christmas Tournament in Houston and then proceeded to go 9-3 in the conference. SMU and Dallas were very excited to finally have a team in the NCAA Tournament -- and Captain Art Barnes was the leader. We will miss you Art.

Mr Barnes coached my church league basketball teams at Park Cities Baptist during high school. A great man, he will be missed. Rest in Peace, Mustang.

I hope no one objects to me posting Mr Barnes obituary. Having known the Barnes family since my junior high school days, I have the greatest respect for him and his family.
BARNES JR., ARTHUR ZINTGRAFF passed away on Thursday, December 27, 2013. It was a peaceful transition and he is now with God whom he loved and served his entire life. Born October 26, 1933 to Gertrude Schultz Barnes and Arthur Zintgraff Barnes Sr in Dallas, Art was born and raised in the Park Cities, graduating from Highland Park High School and Southern Methodist University. He played basketball at SMU, voted All Southwest Conference and was co-captain his senior year. He was married to Sue McFarland Barnes in 1955 and had three children, Laura Sue, Jeffrey Arthur and Stephen Nelson. Throughout his life, Art was dedicated to serving his community through: the Salesmanship Club of Dallas (Past President), as a deacon (Past Chairman) and teacher at Park Cities Baptist Church, on the school board of the Highland Park Independent School District for 9 years, numerous committees at the City of University Park and in countless other ways. He loved helping children and their families, as evidenced most recently by his work at the J. Eric Jonsson Community School in Oak Cliff, where he read every week to his "reading buddy". He leaves behind a long legacy of service to others. Art was the Co-founder of Alpha-Barnes Real Estate Services, where he worked with his two sons and Mike Clark. He held an MBA from SMU and was also an MAI. Formerly he worked at Folsom Investments for 20 years with his very close friend and mentor Bob Folsom. Art is survived by his three children, Rev Dr. Laura Sue Barnes, Jeffrey Arthur Barnes (and wife Gayle) and Stephen Nelson Barnes (and wife Christy), and his nine grandchildren, Arthur McFarland Girtler, Rachel Barnes Timmins (and husband Ty), Sarah Barnes Gold (and husband John), Laura Rebecca Girtler, Art Barnes, Amy Barnes Davis (and husband Will), Meredith Barnes, Andrew Barnes, and Nicole Barnes. Services in his honor will be held at Park Cities Baptist Church, 3933 Northwest Highway in Dallas at 11:00aM on Tuesday, December 31, 2013. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate any memorial donations made in his honor to Park Cities Baptist Church, to Salesmanship Club of Dallas or to the Highland Park Education Foundation.

Thanks lwjr. I was going to do it this morning when I got home from church. I had the privilege of watching Art play one full season with the Mustangs and it was poetry in motion!
