Question about SMU optimismI have seen a surprising amount of optimism on this board. As a Baylor fan, I am optimistic as well. This is b/c Morriss has shown he can win with less (beating defending Big 12 champs Colo in 2003; atm in 2004) and we finally have the depth and experience across the board to take a step up.
I have not seen anything to indicate that SMU is improving drastically under Bennett thus far. You seem to be weak on both lines, which is NEVER a good sign. Many on here still talk about how you MUST beat Baylor, a winning record, ect. I was just wondering what makes some of you so optimistic? Is it the players you have back? Those of you who think SMU will have a break out year, on what are you basing this opinion? Go Bears!!!
...this board is not truly representitive of the basic Dallas area SMU alum, who LONG AGO departed peacefully from this program with some integrity still intact. THis "forum" is basically 25-50 "die hards" who long for the day when SMU regains some sort of respectability...a day, which will most likely never come, but don't tell them that.....an example;

Re: Question about SMU optimism
Dude are you sure you're posting this on the right board? As for Baylor, coming off, what, six wins in two years?? Yep, y'all are right in line for a national championship this year.
Wow I didn't think that I was flaming. Just asking. Anyone have any reasons for optimism or just more trash talk about Baylor? I'll give you guys reasons for my optimism.
Mosley (4.6 ypc last year) and Whitaker (hurt last year) backfield experienced OL and DL 2 experienced QB's who have kept us in numerous Big 12 games until being worn down late Coaching staff pulled miracle turnaround at Kentucky in 2nd year, ours could have just taken a year longer - and dont give me the crap about it being the Big 12, KU was terrible and that was the SEC. Staffs that do this tend to do it more than once, and the signs are there outstanding special teams numerous legitimate all big 12 athletes for the first time in a decade - lane, andrews, sepulvada, mosley, allred, murphy, ziegler, mcdonald all have the ability to be named at least honorable mention All Big 12 this year Now, do you guys have any reason to be optimistic? I am being very serious since I will be in vegas this weekend and am about to lay about half of what I own on the bears...
YES you've averaged 2 wins against Division 1A competition and haven't won a road game since the Clinton administration. As for the Big 12 you don't match up with a single program in your Division. Sorry those are the facts. You're as pathetic little cheerleader of a doomat team. Go do your Rah! Rah! cheers somewhere else because the facts don't back you up.
morriss...the produce aisle needs to be restocked...see to it please...

I would say the primary source of optimism is that over the last few years we've suffered through freshman (and then transfer) QBs, learning a new offense, learning another new offense and bbeing the youngest team in Div 1 foootball.
Now we at least have a year of experience with Rusty Burns' offense, continuity at QB (or at least as much continuity as possible considering how we shuffle QBs), and Bennett's much heralded recruits are finally Juniors (I'm including a redshirt year whether used or not for you nitpickers)... And for the most part we at least are playing the aformentioned Juniors with some experience under their belts... and they have grown into some decent size and speed. Plus we rounded out last year with a couple of W's and the team looked like it was starting to gel. And we lost very few senior starters. So I'd say that for the first time in Bennett's tenure we're almost playing on a level playing field (so to speak). So while you Big 12 types may be baffled by this undercurrent of enthusiasm, the Mustang faithful probably have more to be excited about this year than in any year since football returned to the Hilltop.
LOL, that's great...
Those comments contradict each other. And if you're THAT confident in your Bears, why aren't you betting EVERYTHING you own? ![]() At least we don't have alumni who cheer for the opposing teams! My former boss is a Baylor alum. He used to write BIG checks to your university and attend the football games. Because of your poor showing in the Big 12 in recent years and the coaches that you've hired for the football program - specifically Guy Morris - he doesn't do that anymore. He lives in Waco. On game days when the Bears are at home, he'll go to the tailgate parties and have a good time partying with everyone else. But come kick-off time, he stays outside of Floyd Casey Stadium. He hopes & prays that the other team will win so that someone in the Baylor administration will have the balls to fire Guy Morris. But it hasn't happened...and my friend continues to drink. ![]() BEAT THE HELL OUTTA BAYLOR!
We also have some optimism because frankly Baylor hasn't been a world beater for the last decade since they joined the Big 12. If you look at our schedule, we play only five teams with losing records last year: Rice, Tulsa, ECU, Baylor and TCU. Since we played Rice and TCU last year and got slaughtered by both, we know those will be a tough games to win. So, if you want to have at least three wins like last year which games do you circle on the calender? Baylor, Tulsa and ECU. Add to that that our all freshman- no experienced QB team from last year is: a year older, a year stronger and a year more experienced, and we do have hope that we can show it on the field against Baylor. Will we win? Who knows, but all of us know that if we lose to Baylor, it is entirely possible that we have another 0 for September and another 3-8 season. We don't want that so we are optimistic in our chances of beating Baylor.
Well just because your friend is an idiot doesn't mean anything. I am sure there are no SMU fans who go to the Boulevard then don't go in...HAHAHAHAHA!!!!
did you really come with that??? I mean talk about pot calling the kettle black. Also, I hope your friend was outside during the Colo and aTm games the past 2 years. That idiot doesn't deserve to see that. And what exactly does this [deleted] clown have against Morriss??? Regardless, when was the last time you guys beat anyone decent? Our record may be poor, but it is better than you all's with a MUCH tougher schedule, and we have 2 quality wins at least. What is SMU something like 0-30-1 against old SWC schools since the mid 80's??? Talk more Baylor smack....you're SMU.
Maybe if Baylor did something with those wins ... I don't know, maybe ... win another one in conference? Maybe then people would see that as momentum and forward progress. All those W's look like when they're all by themlseves in the middle of the season ( surrounded by blow outs ) is a fluke W. If SMU is doomed b/c of inferior talent, then you are admitting you're win over A&M was an upset - and perhaps, fluke. And it is therefore, very possible, SMU could pull off the same feat against your beloved Cubbies.
