No more excuses, SMU should be competive with Baylor
If UCF can do this SMU should be able to at least be competitive. No more excuses. Either be competitive or we need to make changes. Not saying we win but we should expect to be competitive.

We'll get some changes after the team bottoms out in 2014. Shouldn't have gotten to this point but that's SMU Football.

SMU as a program should of course expect to do what it can to get to the highest level.
But I don't know why you would expect a team that loses three starting WR, its QB, top corner, and two middle linebackers to go on the road to a top 10 team opening a new stadium and keep it close.
I, like everybody else, would expect more at this point in the program, but there is no way we go into that game less than a 25 point underdog.
I probably have more faith than others in the talent of our younger players all over the field - corner, safety, linebacker, DL, OL, QB, and WR. But this team is going to struggle early next season against big-time talent and then start playing a lot better in conference once they get their feet under them.
In two years, I think you should expect a significantly better outcome when we have the following upper classmen:
QB: Burcham
RB: Line, Nlemchi, Sims, Lagasse
WR: Lancaster, Dickerson, Gaines, Halverson, DJ, Sanders, Taylor
OL:Saena, Briggs, Lasecki, McCarty, Myers, Rice, Reich, Weeks,
DL: Hollie, Minor, Wood, McCleneghan. Nabusoshi, Pruitt, Smith,
LB:Horton, Longoria, Seals, Yenga
CB: Law, Montes, JR, Horace, and Darron Richardson,
S: Montgomery, Randolph
The following starting lineup at that point will be pretty damn good:
QB: Burcham
RB: Line
Outside WR: Taylor, Halverson
Inside WR: Sanders, DJ
LT: Weeks
LG: Rice
C: Lasecki
RG: McCarty
RT: Briggs
LE: Minor
RE: Nabusoshi
DT: Hollie
OLB: Seals, Longoria
ILB: Yenga, Horton
CB: Montes, JR Richardson
S: Montgomery, Randolph
I have no idea if JJ survives next season, but that right there is the best, most complete team he will have had.

Well look Mr JJ suck up if it is the most competitive team he will have had he should be competitive with Baylor. Baylor has loses as well due to graduation. We have the offseason to develop and get better with the player you say are good recruits. We keep it close with UCF with our backup QB and USF beat Baylor by 10. We say that every year about the team struggling early and playing better late. That shouldn't be that case next year in the 7th year of Jones. No more excuses. No more enabling for another year from the JJ suck ups.

Uh oh! JasonB's bringing out his depth chart list of guys lucky to get a Division 1A offer to prove how great SMU will be again. The guy lives in an SMU bubble. What is going to happen is that the cupboard is just about bare-June Jones is going to get run out of town and then there likely will be a difficult transition away from Run N Shoot based offense. See other teams have Depth Charts listing the names of players with more talent than that recruited at SMU

Agree....The non recruiting will catch up with SMU big time this year. No depth.

Sounds like 2018 might be our year provided JJ is gone after the 2014 season...............

Re: No more excuses, SMU should be competive with Baylor
Come on fellas, this is getting more than tiresome. JasonB makes a well-reasoned point, and all you got is "shut up" because the facts don't happen to support your "fire June" agenda? If you want to pick on June, there's plenty of fodder. Go for it. But this "cupboard is bare" rhetoric is nonsense.
My critique of this lineup is that there are too many unprovens. But on paper, I agree that this lineup should be the most complete and (if nothing else, the most) athletic we've seen since the DP if if we can keep everyone unhurt, in school, and off suspension. But those are a lot of IFs.
I do agree that we need to get a couple of recruiting aces in here so that we can develop some depth behind these guys. And we need to be much more competitive in recruiting if we're ever going to take the next step forward.

'On the field this lineup will lose 8 games.

I think Burcham is still an unknown at this point, and almost everything hinges on his development in the short term IMHO. I'm not sure if there's an elite RB on the roster, and I don't know if Randolph can play on this level even thought he looks the part.
But assuming Burcham works out, I think this should be an 8 win team by the simple virtue that it's the most size, speed and talent that we've put on the field in 25 years. So am curious to know where you think the 8 losses will come from.

We have Prescott Line and Traylon Shead is coming back. If shead can keep healthy we have a good running game, and Line should look more like Zach did in 2010.
