Re: Gosselin: will it stay?bill nichols had a write up[/quot As did Rick Gosselin ( hence the thread) on the front and at the TOP of the Sports Page and the Sports Section headline for the print version of the DMN. What is the AP issue?...
Re: Gosselin: will it stay?Gosselin is a hack. Larry Brown's success at SMU disproves every excuse that he used to defend June Jones so of course he's trying to kill our buzz.
Re: Gosselin: will it stay?I thought it was a fair article and it is is reasonable to discuss.
Re: Gosselin: will it stay?It was fair, reasonable, well written, and glad he came out to campus to take the game in. That said, hopefully seeing Larry Brown and his staff in person, and maybe even speaking with them dispels the many myths that June has successfully planted in his mind/
Re: Gosselin: will it stay?My problem with guys like Gosselin who don't know much of anything about College Sports is that they always veer way off into topics they have more knowledge of. This is a symptom of the slashed roster of newspaper staffs trying to juggle multiple assignments. So you get the rather lengthy detour into Rolondo Blackmon and the Mavericks Moody Magic victory. On recruiting date you get the usual anecdotal stories about the 5 star back 10 years ago at Blow U. who failed to live up to expectations while Drew Brees is in the Super Bowl-instead of analyzing the actual recruiting classes. They don't understand recruiting and are openly hostile to actually having the take the time to learn about recruiting so their analysis is worthless. The same guy who devotes million of hours to the analysis of the NFL Draft. The June Jones article was similarly naïve and lacked depth of understanding of the requirements of a college football program

Re: Gosselin: will it stay?Agree, they comment about it just to check the box, but they really want to cover the pros, since the hierarchy of the newsroom is the longer you work there the more likely you work your way up to the cowboys. They seem to have missed that nobody cares about the cowboys until the GM is fired.
Re: Gosselin: will it stay?Any college basketball beat writer worth his salt would have mentioned the incredible visit list from nationally ranked high school recruits because it is the preeminent factor in building a national powerhouse. Yet it flew over Gosselin's head-he probably didn't even know. Tells you all you need to know about his college basketball expertise on building a program. Take out the unnecessary detour into Rolondo's Moody Magic and fill with the real factor in building this program

Re: Gosselin: will it stay?
It's like a Blackmon interview than an article on SMU. Many more interesting angles than the one he took. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk An atheist is a guy who watches a Notre Dame-SMU football game and
doesn't care who wins. -- Dwight D. Eisenhower
Re: Gosselin: will it stay?Again, he has to relate it to the pros since that all he wants to write about. They can't help themselves.
Re: Gosselin: will it stay?Gosselin is a [deleted]. His so-called reporting on Jones was an example of everything that is wrong with reporting - no actual effort to investigate and provide all angles of the story. Here, he focuses on the negative instead. I was just watching the news and the commentators said after the ucla game against USC (their cross town rivals) to wait and see if the ucla arena (an arena he made reference to himself in the article) might actually get full for their upcoming game against no 1 Arizona. Clearly, if ucla can't get their arena to fill up against their cross town rival, then maybe he shouldn't be going off on how we may not when we face off against the Hofstras of the world. He's living on just impressions of what he thinks college basketball is like. He's shown he's not very knowledgable about college sports In general.
Re: Gosselin: will it stay? The USA today article was great and well thought out, more relevant and better
Re: Gosselin: will it stay?
It's definitely one of the downsides of being the lone Division 1 athletics program in a decidedly pro sports city. It could be worse for those who live in Dallas, though... Paul Finebaum could be your biggest sports "journalist" which is the case for me here in Alabama. Fortunately the local sports radio station has hired a couple guys from The Ticket who are doing a show that is more than just a bunch of Alabama and Auburn hayseeds calling in to, caller after caller, go "Hey, Pawl... can you hear me, Pawl? Pawl, see 'Bama done won evurthang it every played for and 'dem 'Barners just cain't stand it, Pawl. You know what I mean, Pawl?".
Re: Gosselin: will it stay?
I sat next to that writer during our tip off luncheon. Really smart and nice guy.
Re: Gosselin: will it stay?Prisbell had a decent article this time, but he's usually a slash and burn hack that attempts to destroy programs. He's a wolf in sheeps clothing
