When I was a student, the fraternities were most of the crowd in the student section. I viewed wearing letters as a sign that each house was supporting the team.

But, times change. Back then, very few fans wore jerseys to games. Now, everyone wears jerseys to NFL games.

When I was in school the colors and shirts...etc. were not a big thing at the games. What was really important was that most of the football team, swimmers and track guys attended all the games in support of the basketball team and visa versa. We were all good friends, lived in the dorms together, did things together and even studied together and more importantly supported one another. Most of the jocks would sit on the bleachers directly behind the visiting team's bench and raise hell all game by tormenting the visitors. Even the cheerleaders looked at the jocks to set things in motion. We could be pretty obnoxious particularly if Texas and TAMU were involved. Fortunately, in the mid-60s we had great teams and would win. Yes, fellow athletes led the charge to lead the student body. If you know any 60s athlete you will quickly find he will probably have a long existing rapport and instant relationship with any athlete from his era.

Yeah in highschool thats how our student section was because the athletes were the leaders on the campus and decided what was cool. It's very obviously the fraternity guys now who decide that, so I do think its up to us in a big way to make sports and cheering at them a cool thing to do for students. It's easier for greeks to organize things as well just because of numbers. The good news is I'm sure pretty every single student who posts on here is greek. And thats where it all starts on this campus

I'm biased though obviously

I wasn't around in the 60's so I'll take your word for it. Last winter, I took in a game at Moody during the holidays and noticed that most of the swim team was in attendance.

In my post, I intended to point out that frat guys in jerseys is not the end of the world ... at least we showed up. With pledges and dates, we (and other fraternities) took up a decent number of seats.
If someone wants to dress like an elf - I don't care
If someone wants to wear their fraternity colors (or party T-Shirts) - I don't care
If someone wants to dress up in drag and form an "Ugly Guy" cheerleading squad - I don't care

If someone shows up, has fun, and gets loud, I am happy.

I was also watching the UConn Harvard game last night and tons of student were wearing bball jerseys, any chance we will see these soon? And not the corny knock off replicas, like the football ones in the bookstore.

They don't sell them, which is the weakest of weak stuff. I would buy a bball jersey in an instant.

The swimmers were some of the best fans around during my era. The soccer guys, not so much after me, were big into sports and came to all the games, but the swimmers were always there in mass and were Bats*** crazy. Great fans.

I did not notice at the game, but in watching the telecast after the game, there was definitely a mens team at the game in the student section - I noticed cause they were in matching blue. I assume that was the swim team, but don't know. Anybody know?

I am pretty sure it was the Tennis team, at least they all had sweatshirts that said SMU Tennis on. Can see a couple of them in the gigapixel picture. I also saw Carl Neufeld the tennis coach at the game.

Thanks - the tennis guys also were supportive in the past and assume so now.

Back in my day, basketball and football was good so all the teams came out to games when we could. I think we can get back there now that we are having some success. It was always fun getting to know the athletes from other sports by hanging out with them at games.

I can also remember a number of times that Bobby Jones ( SMU basketball/baseball 67 ) requested that I go to a girl's dorm ( girl's dorm days in the old rectangle dorms ) and escort a number of gals who were afraid or reluctant to attend. He always had gals line up to go. Sometimes my room mate and I would end up with 10 - 12 (who wanted to go, but were reluctant for what ever reasons ). Word would spread and we would end up having a blast walking over and sitting in the jock section. Bobby was always promoting the team and was a visible leader on campus. Bobby was a leader and this was a small, but subtle way of leading. In the interim, I got to meet a lot of real great gals, have some fun and represent the swim and baseball teams on which I competed. There are many ways to get students involved.

I would as well. In fact, I've wanted one for years...even when we were bad

At 2012's Mustang Club event in NYC, Hart was asked about getting more women to attend games (Football and BB). While I don't remember his exact answer, he said something to the effect that more women will show up if more guys show up. Thus, he was going to focus his efforts on getting male students to show up.
