You mean Cincinnati and Connecticut because they are the ones that are really trying hard to get out now.

Re: LB trying to make SMU the next GeorgetownI don't know if these schools could fall into the category of Basketball School Business Models that we could follow? The obvious Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, North Carolina (are all traditionally Basketball only schools).
I guess since we are a smaller private school I am more comfortable following the business model of maybe Georgetown, Butler, and Stanford and maybe Duke. These schools' business models work. When you think of Georgetown, Butler or Duke you think of smaller private schools, and most importantly you think "Basketball". The time is now for us to define our Athletic Program. Hanging on to the dream of being both a Football and Basketball school has unfortunately passed. Yes we all want to have a strong Football Program, but living in the here and now, we need to accept that SMU is becoming a Basketball School. We need to embrace this!
Re: LB trying to make SMU the next Georgetownyea, you can't really follow the state school model. every kid in the state of indiana wants to play for the hoosiers. same with UK, KU and UNC.
It is also hard to compare to private schools in BCS leagues that get so much more $, like Duke, Baylor, Stanford, Wake, etc. But if it can be done, those are the schools you want to model after. I'm more comfortable with comparisons to G'town, the Catholics and Big East schools. Less $. All-in on basketball. Take local kids but also cast wide national recruiting net.
Re: LB trying to make SMU the next GeorgetownMakes sense to me. ponyinNC, I appreciate your insight. Thank you.
Re: LB trying to make SMU the next Georgetowndoes georgetown have the local papers, radio and new stations against them? is there a large public university that hates georgetown?
if yes then we have our model.
Re: LB trying to make SMU the next Georgetown
I lived in DC for a long time, and Wash Post gives G'town love. They play at Verizon Center (where Caps/Wiz play), so they get a lot of miles out of that (and their ncaa history). But honestly, Maryland is a large public that doesn't particularly like G'town. Also, you have so many Va Tech grads in DC that they can take over as well. I think, as an institution, it is about as close to SMU as you can get, although Georgetown is ranked much higher academically (and is more nationally known). Small, elite private, weathy student base, located in the most affluent part of the city, etc.
Re: LB trying to make SMU the next GeorgetownYou want Georgetown's hoops, UVA's academic rep and alumni network, and Va Tech's football program. Don't sacrifice on any of them. Get them all.

Re: LB trying to make SMU the next GeorgetownAnd given that so many at or around SMU are Charmin Soft (myself included when I started there), we could use some toughening up. Instead of AARO, drop all incoming freshman in Anacostia for a weekend. Those that make it out get a 50% scholly and will be hell on opposing teams sitting behind their bench lol
Re: LB trying to make SMU the next Georgetowngreen line?? um, no thanks...
Re: LB trying to make SMU the next Georgetown
"Charmin soft"...you nailed that one!
Re: LB trying to make SMU the next Georgetown
There is no need to send anyone to DC. There are plenty of areas in Dallas that would provide suitable training. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
