I'm honestly a little surprised that Penn State would even consider a HC who is dealing with gang rape allegation issues with some of his players considering recent history.

The whole Paterno scandal exposed the fact that PSU (fans, administration, coaches) value football success over ethics and morals, so are you really surprised.

I just figured they would be a little more PR savvy for the time being.

They had really better hope nothing comes of the rape scandal at Vandy or this hire with explode in their faces.

James Franklin will do well at a major school like Penn State. He can really coach and has a dynamic personality.

Vandy would be smart to go after Chad Morris.

I have seen some hatred to JJ on this forum - but nothing like what is being said about James Franklin today on the Vandy forum. Wow. A lot of Jilted lovers over there.

Franklin played the negotiations game and must have milked all he could out of Penn State in that deal. This was his best opportunity to get out on top. The rape case, loss of talent, etc would have decreased his stock next year.

Some Vandy Commits have already opened up their recruiting and current players are livid that they had to hear about it through the media.

Love the poster who said that Bobby Johnson recruited all of the talent that Franklin won with.

And James Franklin has better recruits coming to Vandy. If he won with some of Johnson's recruits that means he was a better coach that Johnson. Franklin took that program to heights they have never been to. He will do well at PSU imo. One thing is for sure is that he nor his agent has done any interviews regarding the situation nor have they said negative things about Vandy.

I think he would have to further enhance his online degree for consideration. Maybe pay $100 and have it upgraded to a Masters or $250 for a PHD.

This.

If anything, Franklin has proven Vandy can win, will pay, and will invest in the program. Vandy should get a lot more interest from potential candidates after the Franklin era.

So would I, but unfortunately, none of these would show up here.
How about some up and comers with local recruiting tie ins?

This list basically has everybody we'd take instead of June.

Mark Hudspeth: There's buzz in coaching circles that Vandy will reach out to Hudspeth, who's well-respected in the Southeast and is 27-12 in three years at Louisiana-Lafayette, a definite flex option for your fantasy coaching roster. ULL is finalizing a contract extension for Hudspeth, according to a source.

David Cutcliffe: Not sure he would leave one ascending, academic-minded football program for another, but Cutcliffe could do some healthy schemin' on opposing SEC defenses. Give him a call. Probably too old, though. Plus he's a king in Durham.

Pat Narduzzi: He was up for UConn and Louisville, so he must be doing something right. Vandy has been stout defensively in recent years. If Narduzzi gets the right offensive coordinators, Commodores could be dangerous.

Bob Shoop: The Commodores' current DC will probably get an in-house look. Shoop was a disaster as the head coach at Columbia, which is the Vanderbilt of the Ivy League. For continuity's sake, he's probably Vandy's best bet. Offensive line coach Herb Hand would be worth a hard look, too.

Chad Morris: This is your last chance, Chad. You've coached some good offense at Clemson, Tajh and Sammy are leaving, you're ready to become a head coach. But this is probably the last BCS-level job left on the market.

Mack Brown: Seems unlikely that, at age 62, Brown would want to grind Vandy into a contender. But he's a Tennessee native, he started his playing career at Vandy before transferring and, well, he's a good coach. Probability still low, IMO.

Derek Mason: Stanford to Vandy would be a seamless transition for Mason, who's ready to become a head coach after leading one of the country's best defensive units the last few years.

Greg Roman: The 49ers OC has interviewed for Penn State -- twice -- and could be an NFL head coach soon. More than most, Vandy needs a coach that can maximize potential, and Roman does that in San Fran.

Rhett Lashlee: The guy's young -- He's a man! He's 30! -- but the dude is sharp. He'll be a head coach eventually. His offensive creativity would acquit well in Nashville.

Mike MacIntyre: His four-win debut at Colorado might not look impressive, but those who paid attention know the Buffs were much more prepared and competitive under MacIntyre. His dad, George, was a Vandy coach and Mike went to school there.

Pete Lembo: Here's another name that has circulated for several jobs but he hasn't broken through. His time will come. His detail-oriented approach would serve Vandy well.

Vanderbilt interviewing Brian Schottenheimer today. Not a bad idea for them ...STL Rams Asst. and son of Marty

Paul Johnson being mentioned as well. The same Paul Johnson that was interviewed for the SMU Job...
