Re: SMU campus 1968Nice photos - if from personal collection - where was the second to last one shot from? Looks like vantage point of current SMU bookstore location - but what bldg. was high enough to get that photo at that time?

Re: SMU campus 1968Pretty sure I was one of the last tenants to live in that building in the bottom right corner of the 2nd to last photo. They sat empty for a few years (after SMU bought them up) and were bulldozed for the Bush Library. Remember, this was the place where the guy tried suing SMU about that situation.

Re: SMU campus 1968
that photo was taken from the roof of the hotel now called Hotel Palomor. I want to say it was a Hilton back them, but I am not positive. Corner of East Mockingbird Lane and Central Expressway. we use to be able to sneak up to the roof way back then.
Re: SMU campus 1968Thank you!!!
On the island along Bishop leading up to Dallas Hall, it's neat how the trees' (along the outside edge) in #5 photo have 'finally' come together after all these years. That's 46 years! http://photos.smu.edu/sets/66133 BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

I'm intrigued by all of the brush in front of Dallas Hall in Photo #1. Shake It Off Moody
Re: SMU campus 1968I am wondering if that is an optical illusion. I certainly do not remember any brush in front of Dallas Hall and bubba pony and I were there at the same time. And you do not see it in the photo from the front of Dallas Hall. Is that how it really was bubba?

Re: SMU campus 1968
The sidewalks in the first picture also look different. When did the fountain go in? It looks like the sidewalks (largest Diamond M on campus!) were redone at the same time?? Shake It Off Moody
Re: SMU campus 1968I have seen those bushes in old pictures before.

Re: SMU campus 1968
The Bush Library was built a little further to the north and east (off to the right) of what you're seeing in this picture, but you're right - what you described is the southern-most part of University Gardens. I believe what will eventually built on that spot (now a construction zone) will be a few tennis courts & a small intramural field, once all is said and done. The rest of the houses across the bottom of that image were razed for the new residence halls that are set to open this coming Fall 2014 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d86b0PSb598. The empty field where those cars are parked is where the newer part of the Dedman Rec Sports Building is now located. Don't worry. Be Happy. Or not.
Re: SMU campus 1968
If my memory is correct, when we were incoming freshman fall of '68, they were removing the bushes along the sidewalks leading up to Dallas Hall. The reason was concerns that coeds would be attacked and dragged into the bushes. I also remember that looking out of the 3rd floor of Dallas Hall toward the Dallas skyline, the tallest building had the red Pegasus neon sign. The city outskirts were loop 12, beyond that was barren land. ![]()
Re: SMU campus 1968I had freshman classes in Dallas Hall so I have to believe the bushes had been removed prior to school starting in '68. They were not there when I went to class.

Re: SMU campus 1968
That makes sense - The street in the foreground is the street that was one street behind the strip mall. Used to be a lot of parties over there prior to games at Owenby when beer was not allowed on campus. Great Pics. I am going to stay away from any comments about the bush in front of Dallas Hall...
