SMU got the death penalty because it cooperated? Are you kidding? We got hung because we refused to cooperate at first and when the horse was out of the barn and five miles down the road, we said, okay we'll cooperate now. That's why the NCAA nailed us to the wall. Look at the current cases of wrist slaps almost every one of them the school cooperates (Fresno, Michigan, Georgia, Tennessee, Baylor).
People that say we got the death penalty because we are a small school don't fully appreciate what happened. Read "A Payroll to Meet" or read the NCAA Report which I will get around to posting a .pdf copy of on the blog one of these days.
Here is a tip for the future: When you tell the NCAA demands you ban a booster for life and you tell them you are going to do that, don't let that same booster be the SOLE CONTRIBUTOR to a $60,000.00 slush fund to pay players a year later! Oh, and don't send the money via US Mail in envelopes with SMU's letterhead on it.
They are not cooperating the way SMU cooperated. I believe there is a quote by hte NCAA from the Dallas Times Herald from the day of the press conference to the effect of it was only through SMU's cooperation that the NCAA learned what happened and could recommend the death penalty. I'll have the quote tomorrow.
The NCAA report acknowledges the cooperation of the SMU person with whom it was coordingating its investigation (Kliver, maybe? Been a long time since I read it) and gives him kudos. But not enough to overcome the other stuff, obviously.
