Larry Brown radio show....

Postby LA_Mustang » Mon Jan 13, 2014 2:18 pm

It would be great to have a weekly radio show with LB. I looked at our follow AAC coaches and they each have weekly one hour radio shows - Rick Pinito, Josh Pastner, Mike Cronin, James Dickey and Kevin Ollie. Most are at a remote location for fans to see live. Pinito"s show is at various Buffalo Wild Wings locations and no reservations are accepted. First come, first seated.

btw, LB has done more for our athletic department in a year and a half than anyone post-DP. That said, it is foolish for me to request more from the guy. He has embraced SMU and he's in the process of building a winner on a national level, but I think it would be a great way to continue to build the SMU basketball identity in the area. I know I would show up and I bet most on PFs would too. Not to mention causal Dallas basketball fans who would love to see LB in person. It would be win-win in my opinion, if LB has the time. Just a thought.

Doh had one at TEN downtown. Maybe Dave and Busters would sponsor. That's probably all it would take (a sponsor I mean). I'd be willing to host at my place if the price was right.

I'd be there, but in some respects Mrydel is right. He probably just wants to coach practice, recruit, and then coach games and low on the list is PR. Given what you said in your aside, which is entirely correct, he is putting us on the map even without a radio show.

Maybe he could just do a weekly segment on the ticket, which wouldn't require much time or extra work or resources.

I would prefer not to bog him down anymore so he can concentrate on recruiting and other things - like national stories. We have had some great press lately.

it's a nice thought but I am just not sure it will fly. After a few weeks people would stop showing up.

Low on the list is PR...

Didn't he just send the students a video message?

Confused then, why are we all so pissed that JJ doesn't promote himself publicly?

Fwiw, I think Larry does a good job with the pr, showing up on radio shows nationwide, podcasts, national print, etcetera. But I think it is very hypocritical to say it shouldn't be a priority and then blast the FB coach for not being a good PR guy.

I think a once a week 10-15 minute radio call in to Norm Hitzges on the Ticket would be ideal. He can do that from his SMU office.
They already have a good rapport, Norm's LB interviews have been great the past couple of years.

Actually LB is very visible in the community. It helps when the coach embraces the community he lives in rather than long another place he wants to be.

Not what I said. I was specifically talking about a radio show.

LB has done great PR but not in a way that is production heavy. The best PR he does it at high schools and talking to coaches and former players and the media.

Does a radio show on 770AM really improve on what he is doing right now by broadcasting videos that cost virtually no $ to produce It takes time to show up at every important AAU events he goes to. Would a radio show bring in any more fans if it takes away from him successfully recruiting EM and all the others he is working on?

To the extent a radio show takes away from what he and his staff is currently doing (it would take money and time) I don't think the return is there. Once he gets the team where he wants it, then it might be worth it, if it has a regional audience (what is our contract with 770?).

As far as PR goes, has he ever once questioned our fan attendance or has he said the team needs to earn fan attendance? Has he made a choice to recruit via overhead projector and video tapes sent via US Mail or has he chosen to have a top notch staff and recruit himself as well? Has he ever questioned the culture of SMU? Has he complained about the academic standards or said SMU cannot compete with the big boys in recruiting? This is the PR that I am are talking about.

LB talks softly but carries a big stick and guess what SMU fans are buying season tickets. My sense is LB does coaching, recruiting, PR in that order. He doesn't need a radio show to do good PR; when you have the first two in order and respect the school that employs you and its fans, the PR takes care of itself. He has earned more in free media in 1 year than JJ in 5.

Would June even consider a radio show.

When June goes to his first HS football game, we can compare the two standards the fans hold LB and JJ. The only PR JJ has done in behalf of SMU is to rag on us for no IPF to gooslin, JJT and Cowlishaw.

If JJ worked as hard promoting SMU (as LB has done), as he has complaining, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

End of rant.

I wasn't questioning LBs PR moves. I was just wondering why some said it shouldn't be a priority for him (or a low priority) when it has been a stated reason why some think JJ should be gone.
Part of head coach job is being visible and relevant. Brown has been awesome in this regard.

Larry Brown radio show....

Postby Treadway21 » Tue Jan 14, 2014 12:09 am

Not to be argumentative, but it was pretty much only me that said it. I probably misstated my point by saying PR when I meant a radio show in priorities. He clearly is very PR savvy and cares about good PR for both the team and the school.

JJ could give a flip about PR for the school and marginally for the team. It's all internal for him. That would be ok but we need external PR for the FB team desperately. And complaining about an IPF and commitment does not qualify as PR.
