My Annual Tribute to Ira Terrell

Postby SoCal_Pony » Thu Jan 16, 2014 8:12 am

Ira Terrell, or 'IT' as he was known deserves his Number 32 to be retired.

1) Averaged 21.4 points and 13.5 rebounds per game. He’s the only player in school history to average a season double-double three times.

2) IT's 21.4 points per game makes him one of only 3 Mustangs to average more than 20 points during his career at SMU. Gene Phillips (26.1 points) and Jim Krebs (21.4 points).

3) IT's 13.5 rebounds per game is all-tme best at SMU and one of only 2 Mustangs to average more than 10 rebounds per game during his career at SMU. Jim Krebs (10.2 rebounds).

4) First-team all-SWC honors each of his three seasons at SMU.

5) 1976 SWC men's basketball Player of the Year.

I saw them both. NO WAY Jon Koncak was better. Just ask John Wooden.

Such a great ambassador to SMU athletics. Time to give him his just dues, plus I have to say, I really enjoy his halftime interviews on the radio.

He is. And just a nice guy. I can't agree with you more. I heard some scuttlebutt that this may happen sooner than later. Can't say more since I am not sure it was for public consumption.

I would love him to come back to the radio broadcast. I like Allen Stone, but would prefer IT. I think he does a great job when he fills in.

It should have happened years ago. Hopefully it will happen very soon.

I didn't see IT play but based on his numbers and reading about how people felt about him, it seems like a no brainer to me.

It's not only a no-brainer, it's actually quite embarrassing that it has not already occurred. Ira is one of SMU's all-time great players and ambassadors for the athletic department.

I agree 100%. It's past time to hang his jersey. It also is a shame that Koncak was admitted to the SMU Sports Hall of Fame before both IT and Gene Phillips.

I agree and don't understand why they haven't done this. I will send this question to Hart...we all should.

gene phillips was inducted into the swc hall of fame in 2006 and into the smu hall of fame in 2011. tell me how that makes sense.

Ira is great guy, outstanding player and loyal alum. No excuse not to give him the recognition which was earned a long time ago.

If I were to show up at an SMU basketball game and Ira wasn't there, I'd think I was in the wrong building. Amazing player and fan.

If IT had Koncak's size, he would have been an NBA all-star
