Based on recent conversations I've had with people who I know are pretty connected to SMU athletics. I imagine some on this board are either connected or similarly know people who are.

Don't bother-This is what you'll hear:

June Jones-"I think this is the strongest recruiting class I've had as a college coach-our staff did a wonderful job"
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.

Well, with the way the gutless shills in our Athletic Department handled Junes extension, I would say expect something in the basement janitors closet and the announcement will be made after it happens.

Chill out. The extension isn't worth the paper it's written on after 2014. No one was willing to write the multimillion dollar check to buy out JJ after 2013, so he's still here. After 2014, he's likely gone unless he somehow manages a winning record against a schedule more difficult than last year with less talent.

Blaming Rick Hart is pretty naive...there wasn't much else he could do.

Good job, guys. Support job failure. This has zero to do with any student athlete on campus. Support the failure; honor and praise the exalted one - June Sheldon Jones. Unhirable anywhere else in the universe. Lauded by the clueless at SMU.

Aim low boys, they're riding Shetlands.

Do me a favor and point out the specific posts in this thread you are referring to that are lauding or praising June? I looked but could not find them for some reason. I am sure I just overlooked them because obviously you would not have said that if they were not there.

I think ECM is probably right on this. Between a rock and a hard place for Hart.

The difference in perceptions among those who follow the program closely and the casual fan was recently illustrated to me when I got a congratulatory e-mail from my father (a 4-year Mustang letterman, former SWC high point man in track who lives out-of-state and follows SMU athletics – albeit as a casual fan) when they extended June's contract. So I believe the perception we have is different from the inside out than from the outside world in.

Any hypothetical incoming candidate of merit this past year would have had to weigh an increase in salary and job "status" against the track record at SMU (a tough place to win at regardless of your opinion of the State of the Mustang Union) and the perceived lack of insecurity at a school where they just fired a coach who went to 4 bowls in 5 years and resurrected one of the most moribund football programs of the last two decades.

Next year:
If June wins 6-7 next year, it's status quo and we're still in limbo
If June wins 8+ next year, everybody but Rebel10 is happy and June stays.
Less than 6 wins and (assuming the buyout is reasonable) Hart has a much better story to sell.

So pretty much anything other than 6 wins next year will make Hart's job easier IMHO.

Yeah, absolute worst case scenario next year would be getting blown out vs BU, A&M, and TCU, scrounging up six wins, and going to our 5th bowl (albeit the Beef'o'Whatever Bowl) in 6 years or whatever.
