DMN...at it again.

Postby ParkyPony » Sat Jan 18, 2014 10:39 am

Well, the Dallas Morning Big 12/SEC News is at it again. They leave out of their list of TV games today SMU vs. UCF that is being televised on ESPN News. BTW, does it chap anyone else that they constantly put the conference standings of the Big 12 and SEC after scores from the previous nights games and they always bold the Texas or Oklahoma schools? They of course do NOT do that for any AAC standings box. That's OK, when we finally get into high gear I'm sure they will come around on their "high horse" as they always do. I hope the SID denies all but 2 media requests'.

Why would he deny any media requests? So we don't get coverage out of spite. Ridiculous.

It's not out of spite, Laxer. It always seems that they only want to jump on our wagon when it is headed in an upward direction. Believe me, I totally appreciate the coverage we have received with some newfound success of the program, but for your HOMETOWN newspaper to not be aware of when are on TV so as to let even the casual DFW basketball fan have an opportunity to watch us play is pretty hard to swallow. If BB fans know we are on TV and have a great showing, who knows...they might just want to BUY a ticket to come see us play at the next home game.

ESPNNews is not listed in Little Rock either. I think it is due to them just not listing that particular network and not to spite SMU.

Just an oversight. They had a good article on the three game stretch and a picture and article on Mumme leaving.

I understand that there are A LOT of alums from other schools in the DFW area, but SMU is Dallas' hometown team. We should be front page news win, lose, or draw. All the time. It's nuts.

I remember when I first visited SMU in high school, all I saw was this tiny exit sign off of Central Expressway and was blown away. It was like I knew more about SMU being from Memphis, TN, than Dallas did. I think the signage has gotten bigger since then (over 20 years ago), but I can never understand the lack of Dallas coverage of us I don't care how good/bad we are. The point is that we are THE college in Dallas. I go to dallasnews.com, click on sports then colleges and we are very very rarely anywhere to be seen. We should be front page all the time. Very odd.

You explained it all in the first part of your first sentence.

There are a lot of alums of a lot of schools in a lot of cities. But I've never seen a major Div1 school get almost absolutely no press in their hometown. Maybe we are just an extreme rare case: a small, private Div1 school in a major big city. Who else is their like that? I actually can't think of one. Stanford is not small. USC is not all that small (and with their history and they are indeed an exception). Vandy isn't really in a major city neither is Tulane. Maybe Rice? But they are more like an ivy school with sports definitely taking a backseat to their academics. Can't really think of one off hand actually that's a good comparison.

That is part of it but the DMN and Belo were founded and still run by UT devotees. There is little mystery that Channel 8 went out of their way to publicize our misdeeds with the DMN piling on. No similar investigations were conducted down the road in Austin. The DMN has only given lip service to our program as long as I remember and I am getting pretty old. Oddly, I was in Abilene for business on Monday and there was a prominent story on the front page of their sports section about our previous day's game with Louisville. It was an AP wire story, but the tone was very favorable about LB and our program in general. I didnt see the DMN on Monday but I wonder how they rated the importance of that game.
