DALLAS (SMU) - Junior diver Devin Burnett placed first (393.55) in the 1-meter dive and was named the Most Valuable Diver of the meet as the SMU men's swimming and diving team placed sixth at the 30th annual Classic at SMU. Burnett placed first in the 3-meter dive on the first day of the classic.

"It was another great Classic," head coach Eddie Sinnott said. "We had almost 100 percent season best times this weekend, which sets us up very well for the upcoming championship season. We also brought home some hardware with Devin's great performances which is always great."

"It was a great meet for Devin," head diving coach Jim Stillson added. "There was some really good competition here this weekend and he really stepped up and won comfortably."

No. 1 ranked Michigan won the highly-competitive Classic with 333 points while No. 3 Florida was a close second (321 points). Placing third through sixth was No. 6 USC (298), No. 8 Louisville (266.5), Purdue (244.5) who is receiving votes and SMU (210). All rankings according to the CSCAA Coaches Poll.

For the swimmers, in the 500-yard freestyle, sophomore Eastman Holloway and senior Matt Roney finished with times of 4:32.79 and 4:42.87, respectively. Seniors Nicolai Hansen and Matthew Napier-Jameson clocked times of 2:01.26 and 2:05.46 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Hansen also finished with a time of 1:51.10 in the 200-yard individual medley.

In the 100-yard freestyle, freshman Ziga Cerkovnik and senior Ryan Koops recorded times of 45.13 and 45.40, respectively.

SMU returns to action next Friday, Jan. 24 for the Mustangs final home meet of the season as they will host Texas A&M who was receiving votes in the latest poll. The match begins at 7:00 p.m. CT in the Perkins Natatorium.
