Tailgate Question

Postby clickbear » Mon Aug 29, 2005 11:50 am

Hey SMU Fans,

Can you help answer this question for me? I have heard SMU allows tailgating on campus other than on the Boulevard. If this is correct where is this allowed and are there any other rules we need to know about. I'm aware that you have to pay a fee to set up a tent on the boulevard and hire a bartender and etc. This weekend should be a fun one regardless of what the score is at the end of the game. Any help or tips you might can provide would be great!

Get to the BLVD early. There are areas to setup for free and you do not need a bartender.

Here is the info you will need:

Alcohol and grilling are only allowed on the boulevard on campus.

Many people tailgate in the parking lot at 6060 North Central expressway. This is immediately east of campus on highway 75. You can try that area, but there are no guarantees that the building security will ask you to put away the alcohol and/or put out the grills. It is private property.
Just send 'da money.

BrianBigD,

Thanks for the link. Can you tell me what color the area is for tailgating where anyone can set up? When you say get there early since it is a 7 pm kickoff what time is suggested to get there and still have spots open.

From the link given above:

For some fans, gameday isn't gameday without a barbeque. On gameday, tailgating will occur on all open, paved surface lots south of Daniel Avenue and on The Boulevard. Before you fire up the grill, please note the following grilling guidelines:

Electric and propane/butane grills can be used in all tailgating areas.
Charcoal grills are permitted only on The Boulevard.
Grilling is not allowed in parking garages.
For safety reasons, special red 55-gallon disposal bins will be provided for safe coal disposal.
For everyone's safety, fire extinguishers are required when grilling on campus.
Grilling should cease one-half hour before kickoff

fire extinguishers?

Is the fire extinguisher policy enforced? That's news to me.

The Baylor fans need to go to the purple area, the alcohol free area. Lapsed Baptists can go to the yellow areas with a note.

According to some of the other posts on this board, there are going to be 15K to 20K Baylor fans at this game. Because of this large herd of Baylor Baptists, have we expanded the alcohol free area on the boulevard? We better be prepared.

They'll be the first to use it. We always taigate across the Boulevard from Perkins and laugh at the vast unspoiled non-alcoholic tailgaiting area.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

You will want to go to the Yellow area.

I would get there at noon. That is jus me. This gives you a chance to stake out your territory. You can pull straight up to the area you want to be in and unload the tent, grill, Big Screen TV, satellite dish, margarita machine, generator, and of course tables and chairs. Then you can find a nearby parking spot so you can pull up after the crowds have left and get out in a hurry.

You need to bring something that at least looks like it will put out a fire. They do not tet them but DO ask to see one.

I have been sent to the store when I did not bring one.

Be careful though, because folks that purchase parking spots on the BLVD and have been setting up on the BLVD for years at their parking spot will ask you to move.

It may be best since you are a visiting team one-timer to arrive a little later and pick one of the spots not taken.

Don't worry there are always a few empty spots because not everyone that purchases parking sets up a tent.

You should be fine getting there between 3-4PM.

Unfortunately, only the parking spots are reserved. The grass is first come, first served. So you'd better get there early if you want to be next to your car.

The grass parts that adjoin the parking spot is also for those that purchased that spot. You will be asked to move as I have done on several occasions.

To be up front, there is plenty of room for many people to put out a picnic. The fun part is to walk up and down the boulevard and see the people.
