Ulric is the man. Unfortunately I wouldn't be surprised if he goes somewhere else, but he's certainly got a good thing going here at SMU

I'll admit, the prospect of Jankovich taking another job and losing Larry the next year is scary. Hopefully the timing all works out.

That said, the maxim "winning solves everything" rings true here. If we've built a solid program, quality coaches will want to be here.

If Jank goes somewhere else LB will have another good coach in line. We'll be okay either way imo. If we win other programs will want our assistant coaches. That is a good thing. Again, LB will have good coaches wanting to come here if someone leaves.

I would agree with that as well.

I'd be very happy if we set up Ulric as a potential head coach down the road. Not sure if we'll be able to hold onto him long enough.

I'm a big fan of Jankovich though; if Larry were to leave in the near-term I think he's our guy for sure.

Case in point - Vanderbilt football.

Good point. They'd probably be even better if Calipari stuck around, but that wasn't going to happen and Pastner has done a respectable job. (Plus, the school as a whole is committed to the basketball team's success.)

Larry wasn't the one who insisted on having a Head Coach In Waiting, that was SMU. I believe Larry laughed at the idea and said something like "Every coach on my bench should be a head coach in waiting if I am doing my job right".

Well whoever's idea it was, it made me feel better about hiring an older coach at the time. First thing I said after Doh got fired was, "they better not go hire some old guy."

Long story short: never listen to me.

I am not worried about Jank in any way. Just wondering if he has a lot of say in what is taking place. He is certainly getting no credit, and I would like to think he would if he is contributing.

This is reassuring - he ain't leaving anytime soon. But he will be almost 80 by the time his daughter graduates. The Godfather sure draws attention.

"My son is a freshman here, and I want to see him graduate. I've got a 16-year-old daughter and I want to see her come here, because SMU has a great school for the performing arts."

Pretty sure LB said he wanted to coach until 80 recently.

I think that's mostly a function of being overshadowed by Larry Brown. (Who wouldn't be?) I'd have been happy if we'd hired him straight up as head coach. Obviously our current situation is better (much better), but still... I think he'll be a big time head coach, either here or somewhere else.

And isn't he making like 800k as an assist coach. Thats probably better than a lot of HC's elsewhere.

I don't remember the number, but he's definitely one of the best paid assistant coaches out there and makes more than a number of head coaches.
