SMU has Burcham, a couple other upperclassman QBs(probably not a factor actually) and two incoming QB signees(definitely a factor).

potentially even bigger problem is that Jones might be very apprehensive about offering Mayfield…

Reason? If Jones fails next season, or is even marginal, Mayfield's former HC in high school is Chad Morris, now OC at Clemson, who, as many
have pointed out on this board, would be an excellent hire for SMU's next HC.

I don't know how big a deal that would be. Morris left Lake Travis after Baker's freshman year of high school. Is there a relationship? Maybe. Is it strong? Probably not. Besides, JJ probably wouldn't know that

OU is solid next year. I put them as Big 12 Champions with OK State and Baylor competing for the title.

If Chad Morris likes Baker so much, let him offer BM a preferred walk on spot. I bet Baker would LOVE that.

SMU would seem like a good fit. It'll be interesting to see where he ends up. He seems rather entitled at the moment but I, and UH/ECU, can obviously appreciate what he did in the first half of the season. KK must have some serious scholarship constraints to get "his people" in there and maybe Baker didn't have a good attitude after not getting the starting job back when returning from injury. I presume they're set at the starting spot after the win over AZ State and may have some touted QB commitments too.

I think people don't understand the full issue here:

1) he is allowed to transfer anywhere he wants
2) he is not allowed to play NCAA Div1 FB next year, per NCAA transfer rules (un-waivable in his case, unless his Dad becomes seriously ill in Austin and he is needed to be at home, then maybe he could get a waiver. See Shawnbrey McNeal to SMU.)
3) Tech had transfer restrictions: he may transfer to OU. But,...
... He cannot play next year because of #2, but Tech has also imposed a one-year reduction in eligibility.
4) To an unrestricted school, he could transfer, sit out, and have 3 years to play. In this case, he will have to sit out, and will only have 2 years to play.

#4 is what seems unfair in this case.

Mayfield POV:
- he walked on, Tech had no financial investment in him
- whatever contract he signed with Tech, the restrictions are unduly burdensome (and may be illegal? a future argument).
- he "helped" Tech to a 7-0 start, for FREE!

TECH POV:
- he signed a contract to play at Tech of some sort, with a release provision that spelled out if he were allowed to play that there were certain restrictions, including transfer restrictions. If he didn't sign the contract, he would NOT have been allowed to play.
- Tech included a restriction on transfer to any B12 school (likely also on upcoming non-conference opponents). They could waive them, and probably did waive some, but they are now imposing this contractual restriction on his transfer to OU (and others).
- Tech did not invest MONEY into Mayfield (a scholarship), but they did invest time and energy to the detriment of the development of another QB, regardless of whether he was the "better" QB or not. [They likely would have gone 7-0 anyway, and/or had Webb started instead, they may not have lost 5 in a row later in the season b/c he would have been developed more thoroughly. See ASU game.]
- Tech opened the playbook to Mayfield, he had unfettered access to it.
- Because of the previous 2 bullets, it is perfectly reasonable to restrict his ability to play at a competing school. The loss of a year of eligibility acts as a deterrent to transfer to competitors.

OPEN ISSUE:

When you transfer mid-season (January), that does something to the eligibility, I don't recall what exactly. In other words, his eligibility per NCAA rules are affected differently because of the mid-term transfer. Anyone recall this, generally?

Legally, he is probably screwed.

1) I hope teams use Kingsbury's behavior against Tech in recruiting. It is really douchebaggery.
2) he may be better off going to a JC so he can play immediately.
3) Eastern Washington has been good to former D1 QBs.

3) Eastern Washington has been good to former D1 QBs, especially from SMU. At SHSU, or NDState...

That will come back to haunt Texas Tech and any potential walk on candidate there. Every other school will pull this article out. so unfair. After all he did to help TT get to a bowl this year and that is how he is rewarded...with a promise of "maybe we can find a scholarship in the future?" Took the pressure off Kingsbury and fr Davis Webb and there would already be TT people regretting his hire if Mayfield hadn't saved the day early in the season with wins needed for a bowl. Treat people unfairly and it always comes back to haunt you...maybe not this year but it will. See TCU and their guys who quit who were starters in fall camp. No bowl forTCU and Patterson lost any shot at the UT job and instead he has pressure now to win this next year or else his yearss will be numbered....

So Kingsbury did not want to give him a schollie after 5 wins and he does not want to give him a waiver. What a chump!

I found out today that his girlfriend is on the pom squad at Oklahoma. This transfer makes a little more sense now
