CBB Aggregate Rankings

Postby mathman » Mon Jan 27, 2014 8:26 pm

I found this over on the Rivals BB message board. One of the guys over there does a lot of research on this stuff. We did make it into the top 30 with virtually no AP or Coaches votes.

1-27 CBB Aggregate Rankings
This list is based on the average ranking from the AP, Coaches, RPI, BPI, KenPom and Sagarin polls.

1. Arizona (1)
2. Syracuse (3)
3. Kansas (5)
4. Florida (8)
5. Michigan State (4)
6. Wichita State (7)
7. Villanova (2)
8. Wisconsin (6)
9. Oklahoma State (10)
9. Michigan (20)
11. Creighton (18)
12. Pittsburgh (13)
13. Kentucky (14)
14. Iowa (9)
15. Louisville (15)
16. Duke (19)
17. Iowa State (12)
18. San Diego State (16)
19. Cincinnati (21)
19. Ohio State (11)
21. Massachusetts (17)
22. Virginia (23)
23. UCLA (24)
24. Saint Louis (22)
25. Gonzaga (NR)

The next 5 in were Memphis, Oklahoma, Texas, UConn and SMU.

9-13 are all very close with each other. There's a huge drop after #18.

Compared to the human polls, the computers love Creighton with 3 of the 4 having them top 10. They don't like San Diego State. SDSU would be 19th if we only used computer rankings.

Computer-only Top 5: Arizona, Kansas, Syracuse, Michigan State, Creighton.

Wichita State was 10th.

In my view the top rankings in CBB are KenPom, Jeff Sagarin and Sonny Moore. Massey ratings isn't far behind but his site is great, in that he aggregates all ranking outlets on a single section within his website (College Basketball Composite). For comparative purposes, he includes AP, USA Today etc so you can easily spot discrepancies as well as a mean and median and std dev of all rankings.
