Must WinsThere isn't anything such as a Must Win. As someone posted earlier, every game is a must win. The only must win that SMU has had over the past 7-8 years was the loss to a 0-10 TCU which nixed our first bowl hopes post DP. If the team has a good season, no one game would be considered a Must Win. The moral and recruiting benefits will be great, however signing day is in February and a win over Baylor (or KU in 2001) means nothing unless the season is successful.
Re: Must Wins
This is exactly why this is a must win game. What will cause more buzz for recruiting, a win over Baylor or a win over East Carolina? Our win Saturday will most likely propel the team to more wins down the road, even if we do not beat the Toads and Ags. If nothing else, it will show recruits that we are better than Baylor which might cause some to consider coming here rather than getting beat to a pulp against the Big XII south. "It is better to stand on the doormat, than to be the doormat."
The Baylor game is a must win for both coaches. Baylor, at best, will win only one Big 12 game this year and maybe two. It is likely, though, they will not win a conference game. Their best chance at a win are with their cupcake non-conference schedule. How are the Baylor coaches going to explain they lost to a non-BCS team in SMU that has self-imposed restrictions in place that limit their ability to field competitive teams? Baylor should beat us as they are in a BCS conference. The pressure is on them to win.
Bennett better win this game if he wants to be back next year. If he gets blown out, or even loses for that matter, it will be the 'here we go again' talk and the fans and alumni will be looking at the ECU game as the only game we may win. Bennett better play this game to win and not just to hang in there. I hope he opens the play book and really gets after Baylor. You never know with Copeland as an AD. He may actually give Bennett a raise if Baylor beats us. I am still surpised Bennett got an extension with his win / loss record. Most, if not every coach in Division 1-A, would probably have been fired after a winless season. But not at good ol' SMU where we have the "The Commitment" in place. Yeah! It would not surpise me if SMU won or lost this game. SMU does play much better at home and Baylor's would be starting QB left school last year. Both teams are unproven and are searching for an identity. Take SMU and the points in this one. I believe another year in Burns' offense should produce much better results this year. And the fans from both schools need to quit trash talking as none of you can back up your talk with substance of any kind. Both teams have horendous records, for say, the last decade.
BostonPony you really need to reexamine this "signing date is not until February" crap. About 1/2 of the "real" players in Texas have made a commitment-the other schools will really just be sweeping up crumbs and new discoveries by the end of the season.
Look, here's the bottom line: it's a must-win for SMU if they want to start the season 1-4, but not if they don't mind 0-5.
As for Baylor, it doesn't really help them if they win this game, as a win against SMU will only mean the "Golden Doormat" crown, and will do nothing to mitigate the coming @ss-pounding they will receive week in and week out during the Big 12 season.

I said in Y4 it was time for Cavan to GO
How much effort does it take to talk about the 'problems'? None. If you aren't part of the solution, then shut up. If you are unwilling to put forth time, effort and $'s, then shut up. Its easy to talk about 'how it should be' -- anyone can do that, literally. Quit complaining, and go be PART of the solution.
It is unfortunate that most of the alumni and many students have 'shut up' and do not attend games. I would much rather have people who speak truths, refuse to accept the BS that comes from the athletic deparment and their buddies who regulary post on this board, and attend games, than people who simply do not give a crap anymore and stay at home.
As goes the Baylor games, so goes the seasonA loss to Baylor will signal that SMU will have a losing season. Our team may have improved and have better talent; but until a winning QB evolves, this team will continue to struggle. Do you remember the record of the DickerJames team before Myers changed QB's and offenses? Even with real talent that team was going nowhere until they went to the pony express and used a great option ball handler. Yeah, I say unto thee, we are yet in the wilderness and will not cross the River Jordan into the Promised Land until we get the critical QB skill position filled (sort of like the ten-year Cowboy skid after Aikman's retirement). Where is Joshua when you really need him?

Re: As goes the Baylor games, so goes the season
Surely you do not meant that the converse is true. If we beat baylor, we will most likely still have a losing record this season, it seems to me.
Hey JT,
Heard any feedback yet from GRGB as to what YOU can do to be part of the solution...I'd like to know.....
