CONFERENCE USA ESTABLISHES RELIEF FUND

Donations Will Assist Tulane, Southern Miss & Communities

IRVING, Texas – Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky has announced that the conference has established a C-USA Relief Fund to assist those affected and relocated by Hurricane Katrina.

Monetary donations, as well as essential items listed below, will be accepted and distributed to C-USA member institutions Tulane and Southern Miss. Once those schools are taken care of, any additional resources will be sent to the American Red Cross to distribute to Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama communities in need.

Students, student-athletes, coaches, faculty and administrators at both Tulane and Southern Miss followed evacuation orders from Hurricane Katrina. While they wait to return to their University communities, many have been forced to relocate to other parts of the country for an unspecified period of time. Many have been separated from their families and others only brought a limited supply of clothes and toiletries with them.

“With two of our member schools affected so deeply by this tragedy, it seemed necessary for us to establish ways the rest of our conference family and its fans could assist others,” Banowsky said. “Some of these student-athletes and coaches are just getting their first hot shower in days, and we know they are worried that some of their families are still waiting for such a luxury.”

Tulane’s football and women’s soccer teams have relocated to Dallas and Birmingham, Ala., respectively, and taken advantage of the hospitality from other C-USA member schools SMU and UAB. The Southern Miss football team also received a generous offer from Memphis to share facilities until power is restored on the Hattiesburg, Miss., campus and will head to Memphis on Thursday morning.

All donations are 100% tax deductible and should be sent to:

C-USA Relief Fund
5201 N. O’Connor Blvd., Suite 300
Irving, TX 75039

Checks should be made payable to “C-USA Relief Fund.” Credit card charges can not be accepted.

This is a big deal folks... just think about the Tulane football team... they were supposed to have only been relocating to Whatchamacallit State for three days. Three days!!! (I believe it was Jackson State.) Now, we're not talking about DVDs and whatnot... you pack for three days, you don't have clothes! We're talking about boxer shorts, here.

Seriously, I'm a struggling artist. I just donated money that I don't have to give earlier in today. Not to CUSA's athletic effort, to the relief effort. But hearing about this, I'll have to give more... I'm so broke these days that I can't afford season tickets to the Mustangs. (I rely on my cunning to get tickets.) This is a tragedy our nation has not seen since the Chicago fire and the San Fran 'quake of a hundred years ago.

This being a football board, this is a way for us to make something happen. Please give what you can... and if you have more to give, let's let these Tulane boys we love 'em.

Regards,
Thaddeus D. Matula

That's commendable. The struggling artist in you ought to get his @ss down to Reunion and spend the day documenting the life of a hurricane refugee on film.

The phone number at the Salvation Army is busy - as I would have thought.

There are posted times that people are needed.

Take off Friday and go help. See you there.

I was thinking about that, too. Didn't make sense for me at this time. So I gave a little money. Soon I want to give a little time.
