from today's DMN about the Chase brothers' grandfather...God bless him and all of his family during this difficult time. Mr. Chase sounds like a tough man and a proud grandfather. I pray that the Mustangs get a win for him tonight.
UNIVERSITY PARK – Larry Chase is a fighter who said he's not going anywhere.
Yet, his family knows he is dying of cancer, and one of his last wishes is to watch his two grandsons play football.
Bobby and Vincent Chase, two SMU players from Irving, are scheduled to play in the season opener tonight against Baylor at Ford Stadium. And 71-year-old Larry Chase, their grandfather, expects to be in the stands watching.
"The cancer is terminal, and it's going to take him," Bobby Chase Sr. said. "We have to keep his spirits up. Just to have my father every day is a blessing to all of us."
In July, doctors diagnosed Larry with cancer of the liver and kidneys. Doctors told him this third bout with cancer would take his life.
"You know what I told those doctors?" Larry was saying the other day. "I told them [forget] you, I'm going to see my grandsons play in the opener against Baylor."
The situation has been emotional to the point where coach Phil Bennett said he plans to have Larry on the sideline before the game to see his grandsons up close in their Mustangs uniforms.
"I'll be there in a wheelchair if I have to," he said.
The chemotherapy has taken a physical toll on Larry, who has lost 26 pounds since undergoing treatments.
What's also important to the Chase family is that Bobby, a junior receiver, and Vincent, a redshirt freshman tight end, are first-generation college students.
"I have so much respect for my grandfather, I'll do anything for him," said Bobby. "We want him to see us play Saturday more than anything else."
