Signing Day Event

Postby PerunasHoof » Thu Feb 06, 2014 10:10 am

I went to the signing day event for the first time and was curious as to how last night compared to years past.

The emcee introduced June and there was literally maybe ten people out of 150 that clapped. The guy made a joke about "a smattering of applause." There were a few questions about June being an active vs. passive recruiter. What he thought about the star system (he says they don't look at it). If I didn't want him gone so much I would feel sorry for him. It has to be blatantly obvious that no one even likes him. It was cool when Larry Brown showed up and got on stage. He made several comments about how great of a guy June is and that's one of the reasons he came to SMU.

The emcee was a very weird guy who apparently grew up and was friends with June. I'm pretty sure he didn't ask some of the questions that were given to him by the crowd. At the end they started talking about the super bowl and June's youth. It was really just strange. They avoided the question about the coaches lunches, so I wouldn't expect them back. It was obvious that June didn't even want to do this event.

June made a comment about kids wanting to play in front of crowds like basketball has. People will come when we beat a Texas Tech, Baylor, or Texas A&M. Beating TCU is well and good, but they are our rival and we should expect to beat them occasionally, whether they are ranked or not. Plus the basketball team is exciting to watch and I don't even like basketball. Our football offense is incredibly boring and the constant three and outs don't breed excitement. No one is going to come and watch a boring team. The Montana State game is case in point. Win against a team that matters and people will care. Getting blown out on national TV is embarrassing.

Anyways, embrace the marginal season that will come next year. June didn't sound very enthused about Burcham. At least the stadium will have beer right?

That sounds awful lol. Does he really expect to be loved and respected when he doesnt give a crap about recruiting or the welfare of the team? The sooner he goes back to Hawaii the better. I haven't missed watching a game since 2007, but I don't think I'll tune in to any next year. It will just be an embarrassment. PS: I'm a huge college basketball fan now.

Thanks, Hoof. I was hoping someone would summarize for those of us who place a premium on not puking in public. Sounds like it would have been hard for anyone to misinterpret the overall mood and mindset of the assembled.

He will get his wish. Next years football crowds will most likely equal this years basketball crowds.

I heard that comment about attendance and he's right that strong football attendance is something we have been missing. Just take a lesson from Larry Brown and give your fans a product they can get excited about. SMU fans are a pretty spoiled bunch (not the fanatics on Ponyfans or those who have supported the program in the post death penalty era). I'm referring to those bandwagon fans...the ones who are now coming out of the woodwork to support SMU hoops. They will come to Ford when we start beating TCU, Baylor Tech, etc...and winning AAC championships. I just hope that happens again in my lifetime

Larry Brown is also very visible on the campus and the Dallas community as well. He also reaches out to them.

Examples are meeting with the frats and sending texts and emails to communicate.
