I'm all about making 'em hate us, but that stereotype only applies to a very small, specific group. It's not something I'd want people associating with me as an alum and it's not something I would help reinforce.

Like I've said before though, our fanbase is still developing its identity. We'll see where it ends up, but the last couple months have been promising.

It's not a small specific group. it applies to the schools national rep and how we are regarded on both coasts by anyone that actually knows the school. whereas I wish it weren't true, it is, so why shy away from it. Embrace the real

I would also add that it is not about the other teams "hating" us, it's more about them fearing us and to let it be known that once you land in DFW or Love Field, you will come out with an L. No matter who comes and plays us, let it be Kansas, Ohio State, Kentucky, Duke or NC...you do not beat us at Moody.

If larry doesn't won't you to yell Bullsh*t, overrated, and goodbye, then don't do it.
Within 2 years at smu he's already earned for us basketball peasants to do the little things he asks.

Not saying he would take his ball and go home, but he left davidson over carpet.

Agreed.
I don't like the Bullsh*t, overrated and goodbye chants either. Let's be done with it and listen to our Godfather!

It may be our reputation (I agree), but if you think it is the reality for most students you had a very different experience at SMU than I did. (If so, we can just leave it at that.) I'm simply saying I would not advocate pretending to be a "rich kid", drug-fueled [deleted] in order to foster an identity just to fit a stereotype.

(Obviously I'm not denying a large percentage of our student base is wealthy, but we're stereotyped as very specific type of wealthy.)

Like so many other things, I'm sure this "problem" will sort itself out.

Look, I don't care what goes on at the games, so long as Larry has the boys ready. That said, I know a ton of coaches, many of which pen similar letters, and the reality is that they don't care about foul language etc. It's an administrative attempt, probably coming from higher up, to determine the schools arena culture. Do you people really think Larry took 1 second away from hoops, game planning etc, to lean on the students about proper cheering w/o being told to do so? That basically never happens.

All I know is, when the students chant bullish*t and Goodbye Larry turns to them and tells them to stop.
I think it is harmless and goes on in every arena, I'm just saying if he asking them not to do it, don't. He is the boss. I'm sure the students can think of ways to still be hated without chanting things larry doesn't like.

And don't get me wrong, I almost feel bad about the things I yelled at Chris Herron, but he just made it too fun.

This I agree with 100%. I think Larry just wants the fans loud and, barring something particularly "over the line", doesn't really care. Even if it did bother him, I bet it falls on his "good problems to have" ledger.

He does nothing but praise and thank the students in the post game pressers. I think he gets a bit embarrassed because the other coaches are his old friends.

I couldn't disagree more. Make attempts to change the perception if you ever want Dallas or anyone else to care about this program. Playing up the stereotype is a completely stupid idea. Count me out as a fan if we are going to go that route. I have zero interest in being associated with that garbage and would be incredibly embarrassed to call myself an alum in that case. Why not expand beyond the stereotype and make the community want to embrace this team instead of isolating 99% of people including alumni.

I've said it about football/blvd, but I think we should embrace the 'elite' angle of SMU. Yes, we are home to the city's elite and upper crust, and we want you to be a part of it. It's like a country club that is open to everyone. It would take a smarter person than me; we saw what happened with the soirée movement.

I think the key pulling this off is to truly mean and emphasize the second half of that sentence.

Yeah and it's hard to sound sincere after saying we are better than you, I agree.

How about we just create a great environment that everyone wants to be a part of. What does the "upper crust" have to do with anything? Build something that will attract a crowd. You don't need to tell them you are so great they need to desire to be a part of it. Just make them want it
