the home crowd's job is to get the opponents to lose focus and I think Coach Brown has challenged SMU's student fans to do that creatively with class. High noise level, movement and chants are effective and I always liked the life size posters of hot chicks scantily clad to distract the opponent's FT shooter...as long as our defensive rebounders don't get distracted as well. It's great to have Moody packed again and today's students have an opportunity to create something special

lord - this is a crazy thread. Just go have fun. Thats what college basketball is all about. Way too much upper crust that and richie rich this going on here. Nobody gives a flip how much dough your family has. Yell your lungs out until you are horse - thing of something both clever and mean and get relentless on them. Don't be a [deleted] - be a die hard that is loud and makes the floor shake. Combine that with a few thunder dunks from the team and they will want to go home to mama

My goal is to make one of these guys snap and get a T before we are done.

Hoop, you're a good dude and I (and many others) highly respect your opinion on basketball matters. In this case though, we're just going to have to disagree. Fact of the matter is SMU is on the outside looking in. SMU won't have a meaningful D1 sports program in 20 years without waves of t-shirt fans. You cannot be both inclusive and exclusive at the same time. If I were the AD, I would be making SMU a program that everyone in Dallas could get behind. Be loud. Blow the place up every night. If SMU's only way to be loud is to be a bunch of whiney entitled douche-nuggets, turn out the lights. You clearly don't know what's coming.

At the risk of offending everyone, Dallas is just an oversized smu, chock full of socialites, big hair, too much make-up and front runners. If you win at a huge clip, they'll show. You aren't going to grassroots your way to popularity w inclusive policies or aiming for tshirt fans, or marketing plans that try to associate smu w/dallas. Thats not how wannabe exclusive privates work. Use your resources, pay for coaches and assistants that dont make excuses and have a plan. Work the plan, win, flood money into the program by any means necessary, and watch front runners show up.

IF SMU has a shot at being Dallas team, itll be created by winning leading to a culture of cool, ie all the celebrities that show. It's glitz and glam. There is basically no chance at blue collar types, just like there isn't at vandy or northwestern etc. Too many hold onto the impossible notion that we can win over the masses. We can't. Stop trying. It's a massive waste of time and money.

Fwiw, I'm not saying being crass or vulgar intentionally. I'm saying lay off the kids, stop policing them before there is anything to police them about. Quit w the disingenuous, this is how you cheer shtick. Let them develop their own vibe. If that vibe is true to the school and student body, it'll look and sound about like it did vs Chris Herren or bobby knight. Rich kids getting edgey, not contrived or cheer sheet driven.

I agree with this.

All I disagreed with earlier was intentionally embracing an insufferable, played-out stereotype that is only true of a vocal minority... but what you said here: almost 100% agreement.

That said, although I love SMU, I hate the Dallas "scene" that you describe above... but that image of SMU/Dallas isn't gonna go away overnight so I'll just have to deal with it like I always have.

Chanting about money is tacky. The Park Cities are Dallas' old elite, social, moneyed areas of Dallas and, as such, old money doesn't talk about it or brag about it. It's only the nouveau riche that do that.
